PROJECT OVERVIEW

The purpose of the Joint Acceleration of Hypersonic Vehicle Aerostructure Alternatives (JAHVAA) Program is to extend material and processing development and testing of non-Carbon/Carbon (C/C) Thermal Protection System (TPS) materials to establish trusted design allowable data, driving down material transition risks and enabling greater flexibility in hypersonic systems design. For the JAHVAA Program, aerostructural components can include acreage aeroshell components, nose tips, leading edges, flight controls and their underlying substructures. In other words, any Outer Mold Line (OML) related component that must survive the harsh aerothermal and structural environments typical of hypersonic strike mission. It should be noted that OML windows and radome materials are not within scope of the JAHVAA Program.

JAHVAA will be structured as a series of three Challenge Problems (CP) where potential Offerors will develop and mature their proposed materials and associated manufacturing processes. Independent Verification & Validation (IV&V) testing to demonstrate technical utility will evaluate the proposed materials in a series of CP specific component geometries that increase in complexity and size in successive competitions. The high temperature structural materials and any associated Thermal Barrier Coating (TBC) / Environmental Barrier Coating (EBC) will be defined as the Thermal Protection System (TPS).

Project Description
Hypersonic Technologies & Capability Development Framework PIN:

As part of Team Hypersonics (UK)’s overall delivery strategy, it is the intention of the Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) to establish a multi-supplier Hypersonic Technologies & Capability Development Framework Agreement. The primary aim of the Framework will be to accelerate development of the United Kingdom Hypersonic Strike Capability.

The Framework is to provide a route to market up to Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 9 and to deliver future operational elements of a Hypersonic Strike capability, this will be a collaborative enterprise approach to accelerate the Ministry of Defence’s (MoD’s) acquisition of an advanced Hypersonic Strike capability.
It is anticipated that the Framework will have a value up to £1bn over a 7-year period.

Objective

The objective of this task is to solicit new technologies and scaled production capacity to enable advancements and cost reductions of critical subsystems & raw materials. These will include but are not limited to:

· Thermal Protection Systems (TPS),
· Scram Jet Engines (SJE) Additive Manufacturing (AM),
· Cables and Wiring (CAW),
· Glide Body (GB) subsystems & integration
· Forgings and Castings (FAC)

This effort focuses on cost reductions and facilitates the scaling of current technologies critical to the Hypersonics missile portfolio through the acquisition of new equipment, optimization and updating of processes, training personnel required to reduce costs. The industrial base must support cost reductions and increased AUR throughput to establish an appropriate manufacturing capacity to support current and future warfighter needs. The contractor shall establish the equipment, processes, and personnel necessary to achieve cost reductions and higher rates of production capacity. These cost reductions and capacity expansions focus on the processes and equipment that are specifically designed to complete the detailed assembly and rigorous testing of the hardware for all Hypersonics programs.
