Europe’s Typhoon Fighter
By Carl Posey
Air & Space magazine, July 2012
...
The other quality Typhoon pilots talk about a lot is “carefree handling.” Almost every airplane will, at some combination of angle of attack, speed, and trim, stall—depart, as they say. But, so far at least, the Typhoon’s departure, if there is one, remains its secret. “Nothing you can do to depart it,” said Attridge. “The Typhoon is very precise, not a jerky airplane, not like you’re flying along on the edge of a knife. The engine response is as precise as on Hornets, which you need for carrier operations. You feel attached to it.”

“At low speed,” Bowman explained, any recovery moves are “all done automatically. The aircraft gives an audio warning to the pilot. If the pilot chooses to do nothing, the aircraft will take control, perform a recovery maneuver, throttle up to military power…finish the recovery, and give itself back to the pilot.” At the high-speed end, the airplane cues the pilot when it begins to touch the corners of its large performance envelope. But departures, said Bowman, “are not something we’d expect to encounter.”

Flying the Tornado in mock combat exercises, Attridge said, he was often “glad when it was over.” No longer. He has flown the Typhoon in exercises against the Mirage 2000, F-15, Su-30 Mk.2, and F-16, none of which “caused any problem for the jet in a visual fight.” One civilian observer at Warton, familiar with the Typhoon’s capabilities, was less kind. Beating F-16s in a Typhoon, he told me, was about as challenging as “clubbing seals.” The Typhoon also reportedly was able to get a radar lock on the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor—the top U.S. fighter—in a 2006 exercise at Naval Air Station China Lake, according to International Air Power Review magazine [y también Tifones han blocado Raptors en 2010 en RU con el IRST Pirate].
...
The Typhoon had “buddied up” with the Tornado for the first two weeks of the Libyan campaign to take advantage of the Tornado crews’ Afghanistan experience. After that, the Typhoon used its own targeting sensor, the Litening III, on aerial strikes.
...
Whatever its fate in the global marketplace, the Typhoon will have a long life and prosper. In Britain, the future also means working well with a competing aircraft. “In the future, you could see the Joint Strike Fighter and Typhoon working closely together,” says Commander Adam Clink, now with the Joint Combat Aircraft Program at Whitehall, which oversees the integration of the F-35 into British service. The Typhoon, which by then will have matured as a multi-role combat jet, would work in concert with the Joint Strike Fighter, Clink says, providing cover while the JSF conducts deep penetrations into—and escapes from—heavily defended airspace.

But the cover would only go so far, owing to the Typhoon’s lack of stealthiness. When paired with a Typhoon on a combat mission, an F-35 at some point would have to fight on its own. “The F-35 is designed to operate in a high-threat environment, the Typhoon is not”, says Daniel Goure, a senior national security analyst at the Lexington Institute, a defense think tank in Arlington, Virginia. “The ability of the latter to provide air cover for the former depends on the intensity of the air-to-air and ground-to-air threats. The F-35 can go places a Typhoon could not.”
...
If and when the Typhoon and Lightning II go off to war, it will probably be with autonomous, unmanned combat aerial vehicles. They are the future.

"A story in Britain’s "Register" newspaper claiming that Pakistani pilots in Turkish F-16s beat Typhoons in the 2009 Anatolian Eagle exercise bore the headline “RAF Eurofighter Typhoons ‘beaten’ by Pakistani F-16s three-nil apparently. Brit flyboys ‘shocked’.”"

'The UK did not need Harriers over Libya'
23 May 2012

In the second of two articles on commanders' thoughts on Operation Ellamy, Air Commodore Gary Waterfall explains the role of Typhoon, the need for Sentinel and how Britain performed without aircraft carriers

During Operation Ellamy last year, the Royal Air Force went to great lengths to conduct air operations with the high degree of precision that was ultimately achieved despite the lack of ground personnel to aid targeting.

Air Commodore Gary Waterfall, UK air component commander for Op Ellamy, saw the operation as a proving ground for several high-profile, high technology British aircraft, as well as an invaluable learning exercise for the personnel involved.

"We've got an awful lot to learn from any operation, any war that we go and fight, it's very important to reconfigure so that we step into the next war as well prepared as we can be," Waterfall told DefenceManagement.com's Matthew D'Arcy.

"It's very easy to – not to criticise, but to look at all the ways that we should live and we should learn. But actually there's real time to look back at what we achieved: the number of strike sorties that were achieved, the overall air package, the bringing together of all the capabilities such as the Tornado and the Typhoon, in addition the Sentinel really coming of age in terms of providing the commander on the ground as their eyes and the ears in the air.
...
As well as surveillance aircraft, Typhoon performed "extremely well" on its first operational deployment outside its Quick Reaction Alert role, Waterfall said.

"It really heralded the dawn of the multirole capability in terms of being able to put bombs on it as well as air-to-air missiles," he said. "Of course, every day, every night throughout the year it's defending the skies here and that's what we are enhancing further for the Olympics as well with the multi-tiered approach. So Typhoon's already on operations, but of course it was the first time we deployed it to an operational theatre and put it in the skies over Libya.

"We are still growing the force, we're still limited in the numbers of squadrons we have got and we are still expanding the force and getting our capability together and we will take all of those important lessons into future decisions as to the impact on the software and putting further developments on the aircraft."

Question: Were operations limited by Typhoon's fledgling air-to-ground capability, which saw it only able to deploy the older Paveway II?

"No, because the Tornado and the Typhoon operated together, and by operating together the sum was very much in excess of the total component part of the two aircraft," he says.

"You had the Typhoon, a 21st-century, capable aircraft with all of its data link - and you had to know exactly where people were at the right time - and using its radar and of course its air-to-air missiles. In addition it had the Paveway bomb. You then marry that with the Tornado with a two-crew concept, people who are battle-hardened in terms of what they had done over Afghanistan and in Telic over Iraq for many, many years; and fusing those two sensors and aircraft together was a really powerful combination.

"The range and the flexible response that the Paveway IV affords you is clearly much better than you can get on Paveway II, which is why many times if we needed to have that range of accuracy we could use the Paveway IV, and if we didn't we could use the Paveway II."

http://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/selex-nears-aesa-radar-delivery-for-gripen-372125
Selex nears AESA radar delivery for Gripen
22 May 2012

Selex Galileo is within weeks of delivering a new version of its Raven ES-05 active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar for integration with Saab's two-seat demonstrator for the next-generation Gripen E/F.
...

Meanwhile, work on the Euroradar Captor-E AESA for the Eurofighter Typhoon is also proceeding, with EADS company Cassidian acting as design authority for the new array.

"We are cracking on, with hardware coming together," Mason says. The first test radar should be delivered early in the second quarter of 2013, and flown by Eurofighter partner company BAE Systems on a Typhoon before the end of that year.

The design retains an upgraded processor and receiver from the mechanically-scanned Captor-M, but adds a new array and an electrically-steered repositioner which will increase the sensor's field of regard by +/-100°.

"The gain in performance is well worth any minor degradation in mean-time between failure," Mason says. The AESA will deliver enhanced detection performance in air-to-air and air-to-ground modes, plus a synthetic aperture radar mapping function.

Mason says discussions with the four core Eurofighter partner nations are continuing, and believes that "those that have money will join the [AESA] programme in the near future". A production contract could come by mid-2013, with deliveries to commence from around 2015.

The Captor-E will be available as an option for Tranche 3A aircraft to be built for Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK, and as a retrofit option for their Tranche 2 aircraft, along with those of Saudi Arabia. The enhancement is also being offered to other potential export customers for the Typhoon, including Malaysia and the United Arab Emirates.

Eurofighter: Signature for Tranche 3 gets urgent
By Karl Schwarz
...
Informally, the pilots from Neuburg recently pitted their skills against their French Rafale colleagues in aerial combat. The results [para el Typhoon] were extremely gratifying, the main difference being the much greater thrust of the EJ200 engine.

Besting the Rafale

Speaking of the Eurofighters close-in combat prowess, Major Marc Grüne, CO of 742 (Zapata), the second squadron of the wing, described to assembled aviation journalists how, on a recent visit to France to demo the aircraft, he had won ‘two out of two’ battles against the Dassault Rafale in mock withinvisual range dogfights. Both fights were a ‘standard set-up’ and merge at 21,000ft and 30,000ft he recounted, adding that the “higher the fight the better the Eurofighter liked it”. He singled out the Eurofighter’s excess power as its trump card over the Rafale in this admittedly ‘controlled’ test but did concede that the Rafale’s EW systems would be highly effective in a real conflict situation. He also noted that the Rafale was able to keep control at lower speeds — due to the ‘automatic’ pull-out and recovery system that the Eurofighter is equipped with and which takes control away from the pilot if it thinks a departure or stall is imminent.

Fuentes: Air&Cosmos (extra "Le Rafale au combat", 2010)
Air Forces Monthly ("Justifiably proud!", 2010)

http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/5531/scan0004r.jpg
http://img185.imageshack.us/img185/9922/afm010002.jpg
"I should not have given the results, because we were only training assets for RAF pilots, still growing on the Typhoon, but I was so proud..."

Pilotos expertos contra novatos. Imaginad.
WAR OF WORDS: RAFALE VS TYPHOON
...
To be quoting results from this training does not give a true reflection of aircraft superiority not to mention the fact that similar results against the Rafale and in Typhoons favour also occurred in this training too, thus dissolving the basis on which these unofficial reports are based.

Throughout the exercise Typhoon was always carrying a greater payload than Rafale, Typhoon always came into the fight above Rafale and Typhoon take off performance was always more stunning than Rafale - all fully as expected.

...
the Rafale is underpowered by comparison with Typhoon, and needs reheat where we would use dry. We can get through the Mach and supercruise in dry power at typical operating altitudes, and you simply can't do that in Rafale.
Pilots who had experienced Rafale's much vaunted MMI were less than fulsome
, concluding that it was “probably great if you're a Mirage 2000 pilot, but the test will be how a rookie adapts to it.

“350 kt, in full afterburner at 35 degrees nose up is not that impressive - at that angle Typhoon will go Supersonic! Note that he was initially only allowed to fly A/S FCS laws!

The quoted turn performance for the Rafale (mild buffet at 4.5 g and dry power and a sustained 5g at 350 kts needing 10 deg nose down pitch) is less than startling -our test pilots could do as well in an F-15 19 years ago when they assessed it at the end of the ETPS course. The acceleration (taking approximately 10 seconds to go from 200-500 knots) is good but so it should be for a twin engine fighter at that weight and altitude.
...
“At 25,000 ft he went supersonic in a shallow dive - he does not say what power he used - if it was using afterburner, this is not great SEP (specific excess power).
...
“Achieving 1 hour and 25 minutes with 5.3 tonnes of fuel (needing a centre line tank) and landing with 500 kg after the profile described says to me that the aircraft is not that different from the competition [Eurofighter] when it comes to range/endurance/fuel consumption.

“He is right in saying that he ‘only scratched the surface of the sensor and weapon capabilities'. That explains his claim to be 'fully at home in the aircraft, retaining full situational awareness.'
“The evaluation was rather cursory and the concluding superlatives are more journalistic than real conclusions and recommendations.

The Typhoon's most impressive characteristic, to those not familiar with its potent performance, was the ease with which it carried large weapon payloads over significant distances in the changeable air environment. On several occasions, en route to the operating area, Typhoon pilots were able to climb over thunderstorms that required other aircraft, with less performance, to re-route around them. This characteristic stood Typhoon apart from its contemporaries.

Carrying up to 4x air-to-air missiles, 4x 1,000 lb bombs, a targeting pod and two under-wing fuel tanks [1.000 lt], Typhoon can fly at 40,000 feet and at speeds of over 500 knots [a esa altura eso es casi Mach 0.9] while using relatively little fuel. This low fuel consumption had obvious benefits in terms of endurance; it allowed Typhoon to loiter over significant periods providing airborne cover with its complement of air-to-air weapons. Moreover, it also ensured that the Typhoon was less of an air-to-air refuelling burden in the busy airspace.

(Source: House of Commons Report on Operations in Libya)
http://www.defense-aerospace.com/articl ... libya.html

Several times Typhoon pilots were forced to climb over thundercloud activity en route to the Area of Operation, whilst other aircraft with less performance were forced to re-route. What makes Typhoon stand apart from its contemporaries is that even when carrying 4 x 1000 lb weapons, a targeting pod and 2 underwing tanks it can still fly at 40,000 feet, with impressive fuelrates statistics. This has obvious benefits in terms of endurance and more importantly, it ensures that the Typhoon is less of a burden on the air refuelling plan in the air-space.

“From a pilot's perspective, the aircraft is spectacular. Despite spending on average 7 hours in the cockpit per mission you could not find a more comfortable aircraft to fly. The cockpit is large by fast-jet standards and the information from the radar, DASS and LINK-16 is displayed easily and accessibly. This allows you to function at 100% capability throughout the sortie, not plagued by fatigue or a lack of situational awareness. Due to the aircraft's huge excess power it enables the flight from Gioia to Libya, some 650 miles, to take just over an hour, cruising at 40 000 feet, 0.9 mach, even with a war load of 4 Enhanced Paveway II 1000 lb bombs, a Litening III Targeting POD, AMRAAM and ASRAAM missiles.

“The first thing with Typhoon is performance. By which I mean engines and airframe,” he replied. “The ability to climb to 40,000ft plus without using reheat means you don’t have a fuel penalty to get to those heights. The fact that you can loiter at those heights means you can spend more time in the area
[...]
Describing the tactical advantages Sqn Ldr Bolton said of Typhoon’s performance capability: “We can put four 1,000 pound weapons on board, fuel tanks, air-to-air missiles and a Litening 3 pod, and still be able to manoeuvre the aircraft with carefree handling just because of the engines and the airframe. It’s just fantastic. Typhoon is a very, very easy aeroplane to fly.”
Such ease of flying allows the pilot to focus on being a battle space manager, monitoring the radar and other sensors for the best employment of weapons to achieve the best effect.
[...]
“The thing that Typhoon gives you, even when she’s carrying air-to-surface weapons, is that the performance still allows you to easily get high and fast enough, to launch a more robust shot that is much harder to defeat, so therefore more deadly.
The author asked Wg Cdr Wells if Typhoon suffers any detriment to performance in an air-to-air engagement when carrying up to four 1,000lb (454kg) bombs. “No, that’s one of the really great things about the jet. Even in a multi-role fit touting four AMRAAMs, two ASRAAMs, two under wing tanks, four 1,000lb-class weapons and a Litening pod, your performance on height and fuel burn isn’t hugely adversely affected.
She’s just easy to fly in that sort of heavy fit.
“When flying a legacy platform, much more of your capacity and focus would have been on purely flying the aircraft, as opposed to operating it, whereas with Typhoon you can just plug in the auto throttle, auto pilot if you need, depending on the phase of the mission, and she’ll just take all of your issues away.”

TYPHOON AND RAFALE PARTNER UP

A pilot exchange programme between the two aircraft types is also planned this year. It has until now, been uncommon to see Eurofighter Typhoon and Rafale working together in a ‘friendly’ way.
The visit, which took place between the 2nd and 5th March 2012, was part of a long-term strategic partnership agreed recently by the two countries and marks a new approach in the relations between the two air forces.

The two aircraft have met several times during Dissimilar Air Combat Training and in almost all the encounters, Typhoon emerged with significantly better performances. As stated to Eurofighter World by an Italian Air Force pilot who recently had a chance to enter into ‘combat’ against Rafale over the Tyrrenian sea: “It was an interesting duel. They are still trying to find where we were as we were flying and shooting at them well above the maximum flying envelope allowed to the Rafale”!

 9) De abril de 2012, de entrevistas a pilotos de Tiffie:
What I’m hearing is that in the air-to-air arena, especially with the HMS and Meteor, but even now, without the missile, the more experienced guys and girls on Typhoon would happily fly against anything and expect minimal losses. They are very, very confident. No one, on or off record, has said anything less than the superlative about Typhoon. I’ve been told that the aircraft is extremely powerful, with sufficient excess power to cope with planned upgrades. Hanging weapons on the jet makes little difference to its performance.
Pilots use the throttles carefully so as not to push the aircraft supersonic by accident.

Jon Lake: I've spoken to large numbers of Typhoon aircrew who have flown against Rafale (all before the Typhoon got its helmet), and to a handful who have actually flown both jets, and while many view Rafale as a good aircraft, none were remotely intimidated by it, most were critical of the lack of 'grunt', and all were confident of their ability to prevail against it in air combat, unless artificially constrained by RoE or exercise rules. Most seem to rate it alongside aircraft like the Hornet as an opponent - capable of providing a nasty shock, but eminently beatable.

Jon lake: The key fact that I heard again and again from sources who did not then want to be named was that the Typhoon had 'won' the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF) evaluation, and that it had been the RSAF's favoured technical solution, not least by demonstrating particular capabilities that the opposing types could not.

As we all know, the aircraft was then rejected before its two competitors, showing that it had effectively become Singapore's 'third choice.

The Singapore MINDEF press release emphasized that the Typhoon was “a very capable aircraft”, but that “the committed schedule for the delivery of the Typhoon and its systems did not meet the requirements of the RSAF.”

The problem was apparently partly one of delivery timescales, but mainly one of the Eurofighter partner nations' continuing inability to accurately and credibly define the content of the Tranche 2 and Tranche 3 Typhoon capability packages.

Singapore needed Tranche 2/3 capabilities that were 'road-mapped' but unfunded, and wanted them in a timescale that could only be met by taking Tranche 1 aircraft.

But this fact (that Typhoon was the RSAF's favoured choice) has always been rejected by the Rafale fans, on the basis that the sources were anonymous, and that I was the journalist involved.

And now, eight years on, we’re about to get a named source, closely involved in the evaluation, confirming to a different journalist, that the RSAF ‘loved the Typhoon’, that Typhoon had been their favourite, and indeed that it had been the aircraft that they wanted. And it will be confirmed that Typhoon was defeated because they, the RSAF, couldn’t be confident of getting the Tranche 2 capabilities that they needed.

Dutch Publish Price Estimates for Eurofighter, Rafale
4/9/2008
http://www.aviationweek.com/Blogs.aspx? ... 29037b3aa7

If the Netherlands would order Dassault Aviation Rafale or Eurofighter Typhoons, it would have to pay up to 207 million euros ($327 million) per Rafale aircraft, and at least 112.5 million euros ($178 million) per Typhoon aircraft, the country's defense ministry has communicated to the Parliament in The Hague.

- Mejor MMI (man machine interface, interfaz hombre máquina).

http://www.nzz.ch/nachrichten/schweiz/d ... 95533.html

the offer [de Eurofighter] is distinguished from the French offer by the following incentives:
1) The price of the aircraft [Typhoon] is lower than that of the Rafale;
http://www.tacticalreport.com/view_news ... offer/2357

"ROME, Jan 22, 2010 (Reuters)
The Eurofighter Typhoon is "leading the race" to win a contract from the Indian government for 126 fighter jets, valued at around $10.4 billion, India's ambassador to Italy said on Friday."
http://www.reuters.com/article/2010/01/ ... arketsNews

Out of all the aircraft, the Typhoon conformed most closely to the Request for Proposals, and in a purely technical sense, it arguably remains the most sophisticated airplane in the mix
...
The Typhoon, perhaps, has an edge here mostly because of its excellent human factors engineering.
...
When these competitors are considered on balance, the Eurofighter probably edges to the top of the final four in terms of overall sophistication, but barely.
...
The Typhoon, too, comes closest to the static requirements of the MMRCA Request for Proposals, or at least appears able to comply with them with fewest changes.
...
the IAF has emphasized the air-to-air requirements when evaluating the aerodynamic efficiency of the various MMRCA contenders because of both mission priorities and the reality described earlier: that airframes capable of superlatively performing the air combat mission are likely to be found satisfactory for the air-to-ground requirement as well
...
It [the Eurofighter] also exhibits striking short takeoff and landing performance.
...
In fact, the Eurofighter remains the only aircraft among the MMRCA competitors to have demonstrated some sort of supercruise capability.
...

RAF Typhoon leads the race to secure £7 billion arms deal

April 2012. I’ve been told [por pilotos de Typhoon] that the aircraft is extremely powerful, with sufficient excess power to cope with planned upgrades.
http://hushkit.wordpress.com/2012/04/24 ... n-typhoon/

2012. The Typhoon design conserves, still intact, its full growth potential to cope with an uncertain future, as no major modifications to its basic characteristics and architecture has yet taken place.

http://www.senat.fr/compte-rendu-commis ... 1/etr.html

http://www.air-cosmos.com/defense/objec ... hales.html

Imagen: http://i49.tinypic.com/34dhcsh.jpg

- Mayor panoplia AS actualmente (incluyendo pod recce).

- Mayor agilidad con configuraciones AS

Y a futuro ofrece CFT.

I've had a busy Autumn, Typhoon-wise, having spoken to lots of interesting people - including Luftwaffe aircrew and normally-behind-the-scenes Cassidian folk at Berlin (several of the Luftwaffe blokes had fought Rafale, which was interesting!), I met the new CO of the RSAF's second Typhoon unit at the International Fighter Conference, I chatted to Craig Penrice and Fabrice Granclaudon sitting side by side at that event (!), and I met an impressive young AMI Major (who had fought Rafale.....), and I've been speaking to the usual suspects in industry and the RAF.
[...]
As to recent Typhoon air-to-air combat/training, the overview seems to be that the Typhoon aircrew community do not currently seem to view any other aircraft as being a threat that is in any way too hard for them to handle - except perhaps the F-22. That's not to say that you don't have to fight threat aircraft in ways that play to your strengths and not their strengths (and that if you fail to do that you can of course come a cropper). Those aircraft with better low speed/high Alpha handling (and the F/A-18C/D is king of that hill) aren't seen as a particular threat, as none can exploit the vertical in the way that Typhoon, and since the ultra-low speed stuff kills energy and "just turns you into a strafe panel". There were some very interesting specific comments about particular aircraft, and I just know that the Rafale fans will hate them when they get to read them...
jon lake http://typhoon.starstreak.net/forum/vie ... f=1&t=2110

Typhoon vs Rafale will have to wait for a bit, but is much less interesting than I used to think, as no Typhoon aircrew I've spoken to recently rate Rafale as being a particularly difficult opponent, and my three most recent Rafale pilot interviewees (all this month [november]) were pretty downbeat on that subject. It's a great jet though, and I've learned a bit more about future plans, so I will be writing about it at some point.

- Mejor motorización, mejores prestaciones, mayor agilidad y supercrucero.
- Mejor misil BVR (AMRAAM vs. MICA).
- Ofrece TVC/TVN.

Re: EF-2000 Eurofighter Typhoon

Notapor Orel el Dom May 27, 2012 12:08 am

- Peores prestaciones y agilidad limpio y cargado (como detalle puntual pero relevante: no supercrucero);
- Radar (AESA incluído) con antena demasiado pequeña y alcance demasiado escaso;
- Menor techo operativo;
- Tecnología menos puntera globalmente;
- Menos maduro en sus sistemas (está menos probado);
- Motorización de escasa potencia, lo que afecta también a la menor potencia eléctrica generable (influye en jamming electrónico, a potencia de emisión radar...);
- Menor capacidad de crecimiento;
- No tiene visor de casco;
- No ofrece tomas de aire de tamaño variable (menos flexibilidad en perfiles de vuelo) ni TVC;

India and the Rafale: Anatomy of a Bad Deal

IPCS Special Report
April 2012
http://www.ipcs.org/pdf_file/issue/SR12 ... Rafale.pdf

The Rafale it would seem has won the MMRCA deal in a competition described as “transparent and fair” in keeping with Defence Minister A K Antony’s “squeaky clean” image. Closer scrutiny will however show that far from being transparent and fair, this deal was rigged from the start
...
If manoeuvrability was key then the only plane with thrust vectoring and thus presumably superior manoeuvrability was the MiG-35. If life cycle costs, ruggedisation and operating costs were the key then the Gripen was king. Should one have taken systems maturity as a sign of electronic superiority then the F-18 had no equal, with the Eurofighter a very close second
– lacking only the active radar. In terms of range, power, survivability and transfer of technology the Eurofighter was well ahead of the pack. The only thing the Rafale excelled at was its 9 ton weapons load being nowhere near a runner up in any of the other categories except possibly ruggedisation due to its navalisation.

Tellingly reports in 2009 indicated that the Rafale was the first plane to be eliminated from the contest. After a whole week of silence the Air Force “confirmed” that this was not the case and there was merely some “missing information” in Dassault’s bid. This basically allowed Dassault to “resubmit” information, begging the question - are deadlines actually deadlines? Should Eurofighter now want, it possibly has a legal precedent to “re-submit” some “missing information”.
...
Operational sovereignty was obviously high on the agenda given the mass elimination of American made or American powered planes as well as Russian planes given their abysmal records, the former political, the latter logistical.

The final choice then was for a “jack of all trades” but the two choices were poles apart. While the Eurofighter was almost consistently top of every category – truly a “jack of all trades”, the Rafale was near the bottom of every category – essentially the “dunce of all trades”. In terms of electronic sophistication, optronics, future growth, survivability, and power it stood far behind the pack with its only advantages being its 9 ton weapons load and navalisation.

Should the Rafale carry its advertised maximum 9 ton weapons load, its range and manoeuvrability drop significantly... a woefully underpowered Rafale carrying one ton more [9 en lugar de 8 del Sujoi], essentially little more than a bomb truck unable to manoeuvre because of its underperforming engines.

Ultimately while the Rafale has been described as a Eurofighter “Minus”, in the Indian context it is in fact a Sukhoi minus having negligible benefits
...
Its radar aperture [del Rafale] is the lowest of any serving fighter and is simply not electronically well equipped enough to compensate for this on the quality end of the matrix.
...
the Saudi’s have both the F-15SE and the Eurofighter while the Emiratis have the F-16E all significantly more mature designs with vastly larger radars an vastly superior detection and weapons ranges.
...
the Eurofighter has variable intakes that can regulate the volume of air entering the engines enabling the design manoeuvrability to be more or less similar at both high and low speeds and high and low altitudes, while the Rafale having no such device (or the provision for such device in the future)
...
This also reflects in the Eurofighter’s service ceiling of variously 64 to 70 thousand feet – a full 10 to 16 thousand feet higher than either Rafale or other serving and planned Russian or Chinese fighters.

Moreover the EJ-200 engine of the Eurofighter has had thrust vectoring... No such modification is being considered for the Rafale.
...
The Eurofighter is a full 1 tonne lighter than the Rafale but its engines are significantly more powerful in both dry and wet thrust. This means... it can also transfer much more power to on board electronics for electronic warfare and ISTAR missions... Also it adds significantly to the Eurofighter’s manoeuvrability advantage producing a much more agile aircraft capable of evading anti-aircraft missiles.

The one current advantage that the Rafale has is its AESA radar, as opposed to the Eurofighter’s radar which is yet to be integrated, and this is a point that Dassault have been stressing. This however is only half the story. The radar aperture being the smallest of any new plane, the array is simply not big enough to outrange/outdetect other AESA’s when they come online. Given that the J-10, J-11 and J-20 have significantly bigger radomes, and China’s first generation of AESA’s are already testing out, Dassault claims of a Rafale advantage are very short term at best or illusory at worst.
...
To be noted here is that the Eurofighter has one of the largest radar apertures on the market east or west.

Moreover the French fighter is mated to the MICA BVRAAM, which the IAF has in a monumentally flawed decision gone in for; given that Pakistan’s acquisition of the AMRAAM and the SD-10 outrange this missile by a factor of 50 to 100 %.
Yes the Rafale can be mated to the much longer range meteor with the RBE-2 AESA, but the extraordinarily small radar aperture will mean that the Rafale will be hunting clueless in the air and will not be able to fully exploit the meteor’s range, being permanently defensive not having the ability to get off the first shot.

Electronic warfare is yet another issue. The Typhoon has significantly greater reserves of onboard electrical generation capacity to provide for jamming and other ISTAR roles...
The Eurofighter can do this quite admirably while the Rafale’s ability to do this is highly suspect. In may ways the Rafale brochure say it all and is a masterpiece of spin. It touts the abilities of a “passive” radar and the passive SPECTRA self protection system. In this particular case it is just another way of saying that the Rafale simply does not have any onboard power to radiate the large quantities of energy required for jamming the latest generation of Russian and Chinese AD systems and radars. Thus the installation of an AESA on the Rafale to begin with is limited by its size and is significantly compounded by inadequate energy transfer.
...
The Eurofighter’s cockpit [gracias al visor de casco HEA HMSS Striker] enables the pilot to see through much of the floor and body of the aircraft as if the aircraft never existed.
Exactly how advanced the Eurofighter’s electronics are can be gauged from the recent US decision to get BAE to modify the Eurofighter’s Helmet Mounted Display system to overcoming teething problems in the F-35... And EADS was asked to provide the Eurofighter’s system, for the F-35’s testbed platform recently.
...
Other issues pertaining to survivability include the increasing prevalence of optical detection and the subsequent need for a reduced heat signature. While the Eurofighter provides high supercruise (the ability to go supersonic without having to engage the heat intensive afterburners) the Rafale neither has nor plans this capability. Moreover the Rafale being
chronically underpowered.
...
While both fighters lose their masking abilities if fully loaded up with external munitions, the Eurofighter at least has the ability to carry 4 semi-conformal BVRAAMs i.e. a well armed air defence or interception patrol, which is reasonably invisible.

In many ways while the Rafale is a Sukhoi minus at almost twice its price, the Eurofighter becomes a synergistic ally of the Sukhoi.
...
and it [Typhoon] has the ability to fight over 50,000 feet, well beyond both the Sukhoi’s or Rafale’s capabilities.
...
The Eurofighter being a pan-European venture also allows India to make far more European governments “beholden” to us noticeably locking Selex out of the Pakistani radar market and thereby choking their last access route to western qualitative superiority.

Josels, esa noticia http://www.infodefensa.com/?noticia=arg ... abia-saudi

17(R) Sqn Running the Gauntlet
Friday, February 24, 2012

The year began (2011), as many others have, with an assortment of radar, weapons and defensive equipment trials as a prelude to Trial HIGHRIDER. However, the focus soon changed with the Typhoon’s deployment to Italy and Op ELLAMY. In the first weeks, the Sqn worked around the clock to deliver key software updates to improve survivability, before testing began on improvements to weapons, communications and targeting systems. Over the course of the Operation, 17 (R) Sqn delivered in excess of 9 formal Trial Reports as well as other essential tactical advice to the Front Line.
...
It was business as usual back in the UK, with further development of Typhoon software. Ground and flight testing of the latest radar standard, T2P, has delivered new software to the Tranche 2 fleet, improving Typhoon capability, and directly supporting
northern QRA.
...
Throughout 2011, the Helmet Equipment Assembly (HEA) went through thorough testing on the aircraft by the pilots and staff of 17...

17 has also been closely involved in advancing and developing the weapons and aircraft systems for the Typhoon of the future. This has included work on the METEOR missile system, trials involving Passive Infra-Red Airborne Tracking Equipment and future radar and defensive aids systems. Most of this work has been completed while working closely with industry, a relationship that is vital for us to get what we want in the future.

Spinning Up For 2012
...
With the Typhoon having accomplished much in 2011, many more questions are being asked of the fleet for 2012. Moving through January the agenda is already packed full of new challenges for the team to tackle.

HIGHRIDER in the spring will take 17 and its aircraft out to the US. An abundance of resources, airspace and assistance from the USAF makes HIGHRIDER an invaluable detachment for the Squadron. Several trials including essential work with the Defensive Aids Sub-System, will be carried out during the detachment, as well as full testing of a new software standard in an operational environment that can only be emulated in
the USA.

MoD bosses praise BAE Samlesbury staff after fighter’s success in Libya
Tuesday 31st January 2012

Teams of employees worked round the clock in the UK and in Gioia del Colle on the first-ever operational avionics modification of Typhoon – a cockpit and weapon system enhancement called ‘Drop 1’ that enabled Typhoon to perform more effectively in both the air-to-air and air-to-surface roles.

Europe’s Typhoon Fighter
Air & Space magazine, July 2012

“We took the airplane to that theater without any changes whatever,” said Attridge, adding that, in the field, the crew made some software changes to reprogram cockpit displays. Once it became clear that there would not be much airborne prey over Libya, the Typhoon’s evolution into a multi-role aircraft was accelerated. “It went to multi-role in a weekend,” Attridge said.

Software is quite different. Tranche 1 went from SRP 4.1 to 4.2 (UK only, austere air to ground), then to 4.3, and then, post MDC, to an improved standard via what are so far planned as four ‘drops’. We’re now on drop 1/2.

Tranche 2 are on SRP 5.1 and will go to SRP 10 and then SRP 12 with P1EA and P1EB.

The training conducted by the Squadron over the detachment would range from Air combat against F-16s (which resulted in a resounding win for the Typhoon each and every time,) to close air support and live weapon drops.

Detalles:

The MoD calculates the full cost of aircraft per flying hour; the current rates for our fast jets are shown below. These figures include forward and depth servicing, fuel costs, crew costs, training costs, cost of capital charge, depreciation and amortisation. The Typhoon cost per flying hour reflects the build-up of the fleet with small numbers of aircraft currently in service. This cost will comparatively reduce as the fleet builds and is expected to be similar to our other fast jet fleets when we reach a steady state position.

Aircraft / Financial Year 2010-11 Cost Per Hour
Tornado GR4: 35,000
Typhoon: 70,000
Harrier GR7/GR9: 37,000
Tornado F3: 43,000

These costs will need to be reviewed once we have finalised the SDSR decisions and how they will be implemented.

List of combat aircraft flight cost per hour
From various sources and their claims:

- Eurofighter Typhoon – $14,000 USD

http://www.spiegel.de/spiegel/vorab/0,1 ... 32,00.html

The cost per flight hour on the Eurofighter, if you ask the Germans, is 40,000 Euros. And if you ask the RAF, because they’re doing more things with the aircraft, and they count their numbers differently, they’ll tell you the cost per flight hour is 96,000 pounds.

Para que veamos qué baile de cifras

Nuevo dato:
July 4, 2012
The study conducted by IHS Jane's Aerospace and Defense Consulting, compared the operational costs of the Gripen, Lockheed Martin F-16, Boeing F/A-18 Super Hornet, Dassault’s Rafale, Eurofighter Typhoon and the F-35 aircraft.

The figure for the Rafale was USD 16500 per flying hour and number for the Eurofighter Typhoon, derived from British Parliamentary figures and seeming to cover only fuel usage, was USD 8200. But Jane’s estimate of the actual Cost Per Flying Hour for the Eurofighter, keeping in mind supplies and scheduled maintenance raised the figure up to USD 18000.
