Oman Will Soon Buy Typhoons, Hawks
Dec. 19, 2012
BAE Systems is preparing to close a deal with Oman to supply Typhoon fighters and Hawk jet trainers to the country’s air force.
The deal, expected to be signed in Oman on Dec. 21, is part of a wider defense pact due to be inked by the two governments that day, said industry sources who asked not to be named.
Oman will receive the latest Tranche 3 version of the Typhoon
http://www.defensenews.com/article/2012 ... |FRONTPAGE

Press Release - Eurofighter Typhoon Welcomes Oman as a New Customer

Friday, 21. December 2012

The Eurofighter community welcomes Oman as a new member to join the international defence programme. Oman will become the seventh customer to operate the world’s most advanced new generation swing-role/multi-role combat aircraft.

On behalf of the Eurofighter consortium and its European Partner Companies (EPC) the CEO of Eurofighter, Enzo Casolini, said: “We are pleased to welcome Oman as the newest member of our Eurofighter family. Eurofighter Typhoon is an exceptional aircraft and is already proven and trusted by six nations to effectively perform in all operational environments. This is wonderful news and another milestone in the history of our successful programme. We are looking forward to developing a long-term partnership with the Royal Air Force of Oman.”

Since entry-into-service in 2004, more than 340 aircraft have been delivered to six nations: the UK, Germany, Italy, Spain and export customers Austria and Saudi Arabia. There are now 20 Eurofighter Operating Units all over the world. So far the worldwide Eurofighter fleet has achieved over 160,000 flying hours.

Press Release - BAE SYSTEMS WELCOMES OMAN ORDER FOR TYPHOON AND HAWK AIRCRAFT
Friday, 21. December 2012

BAE Systems welcomes the decision by the Sultanate of Oman to purchase 12 Typhoon and eight Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer (AJT) aircraft. This contract is further recognition that both Typhoon and Hawk are leading aircraft in their class, providing the best capabilities available.

As well as supplying aircraft, BAE Systems will provide in-service support to the Royal Air Force of Oman’s (RAFO) operational tasks.

Deliveries are expected to commence in 2017.

Responding to the announcement Guy Griffiths, Group Managing Director for BAE Systems’ International business said: “Receiving this contract is an honour and is excellent news for both BAE Systems and the Eurofighter Typhoon consortium. BAE Systems has a long history of working in Oman and we are delighted this contract will enable us to continue to work together. We believe that Oman has now added the most advanced fighter jet and proven training aircraft, available in the world, to its military portfolio.

“We look forward to working in partnership with Oman’s Ministry of Defence, and the Royal Air Force of Oman, to ensure this is a highly successful programme that maximises the potential of both Hawk and Typhoon.”

Oman becomes the seventh country in the world, and the second in the Middle East, to operate the Typhoon, joining the air forces of the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Spain, Austria and Saudi Arabia.

This order of Hawk AJT’s follows an order from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in May of this year. This order takes the total number of Hawk aircraft sold, or on order, to 998.

This announcement also strengthens the long standing relationship between BAE Systems and the Sultanate of Oman. Oman currently operates Jaguar fighter aircraft and trains pilots on an earlier variant of the BAE Systems Hawk.

No XI Squadron deployed with eight single-seat Typhoon FGR4s configured to exactly the same standard and one two-seat Typhoon T3, which had some slight differences. The aircraft were running SRP 4.3 Drop 2 software (the latest standard for Tranche 1 aircraft) and loaded with the R2Q radar processor upgrade – which was planned in accordance with the aircraft’s overall development programme and was not loaded specifically for the American deployment.
Drop 2 provides better display functionality in the air-to-air and air-to-surface domains by delivering more pertinent information at a more appropriate time. Information fed by the radar is one example. Another involves the display of clear circles around those aircraft tagged as co-operative friendly assets within the battlespace fed by the data link and shown by the HEA (head equipment assembly). The pertinence of the displayed symbology gives the pilot much greater situational awareness and minimises the number of inputs he or she has to make into the jet.
The amount of work involved loading the Drop 2 and R2Q software and the time required for fitting each pilot with the helmet meant some jets were not configured for the HEA and some pilots did not have it fitted.

Phase 1 Enhancement A – P1EA
P1EA is an important milestone for Typhoon and provides the following capabilities and improvements:

Paveway IV integration.
GBU-48 level 1integration.
EGBU-16 PGM level 1 integration.
GBU-10 / GBU-16 integration.
Full Litening III LDP integration.
Ability to strafe with the cannon (with SRP 5.1).
Simultaneous multiple ground and air attack capability (four targets simultaneously or six targets successively).
Helmet targeting (both air to air and air to ground weapons).
IRIS-T phase 2 integration (digital interface).
Autopilot modes to include Approach and CAP.
MIDS (Multifunctional Information Distribution System) enhancements.
Global Positioning System expanded from 12 to 24 channels.
Chaff / flare improvements.
Enhanced ROVER compatibility.
Voice integration increased to 90 commands.
Elements from Drop 1.

Phase 1 Enhancement B – P1EB
P1EB is scheduled to deliver the following enhancements and new capabilities:

New display formats including revised head-down cues.
GPS improvements to counter jamming.
Toss and dive air to ground attack profiles.
Mío: six targets simultaneously.
Improved helmet integration.
Tactical display improvement to provide more information.
MIDS enhancements.
PIRATE upgrade.
Radar upgrade.
Voice integration expanded to over 100 commands.
Integration of a RAIDS pod.
Elements from Drop 2 and Drop 3.

The Phase 1 Enhancement (P1E) programme will give Tranche 2 Typhoons, what BAE Systems describes as seamless air-to-ground integration compared to that incorporated under the austere air-to-ground package.
The P1E also provides full digital integration of the IRIS-T air-to-air missile (MBDA’s Advanced Short Range Air-to-Air Missile has had a digital integration since Tranche 1 Block 5), with high off-bore sight targeting and firing via the head-up display and the helmet. IRIS-T is not a UK requirement.
Improvements to Rover, identification-friend or foe, forward lookinginfrared, chaff/flare and the Defensive Aids Sub-system ( DASS), with improved threat detection accuracy and enhanced countermeasures technologies, are also included in P1E.
The Phase 1 Enhancement will be achieved via two separate software releases (P1EA and P1EB). First up is P1EA, which provides a precision air-to-surface capability. Weapons involved are Raytheon’s Paveway IV precision-guided bomb (UK only), the EGBU-16 laser/GPS-guided bomb and clearance to use the 27mm cannon against ground targets. The Litening 3 targeting pod will also receive better integration with P1EA.
Introduction of P1EA is now under way at RAF Coningsby, Lincolnshire. Typhoon FGR4s currently being upgraded by a joint BAE Systems/RAF Typhoon Maintenance and Upgrade team will be deployed to RAF Leuchars, Fife, before the end of 2013 where they will be used to commence squadron training and familiarisation.

P1EB will further improve Typhoon’s ability to undertake simultaneous air-to air and air-to-ground engagements. Ground and flight testing of P1EB is complete and qualification evidence will be submitted to NETMA before the end of 2013. It is expected to be formally released to service in the middle of 2014. Operational evaluation, including the Paveway IV bomb and Litening 3 targeting pod, by the UK’s Typhoon Combined Test Team is ongoing.
Further avionics integration work [de la Paveway IV en el Typhoon] with subset P1EB, featuring the full interface between the aircraft and the weapon [Paveway IV] with increased GPS capability, is currently under way. P1EB might be delivered to NETMA at the end of this year for the full-up clearance.

"The software product isn’t determined by whether it is a Tranche 2 or Tranche 3 aircraft," Bowman explains. "We’ve completed all the flying on P1E-A, which is in service with the RAF and the Royal Saudi Air Force. And we’ve finished the P1E-B product now and aircraft are entering into service ahead of the U.K.’s requirement of April 1, 2015. Next up is P2E (Phase 2 Enhancements), which brings significant differences in HMI (Human Machine Interface) such as better integration of the helmet, and so on."

Drops

Initially only used by the UK, a Drop was originally a nationally cleared upgrade for Tranche 1 aircraft that is not given our nation clearance, only done in a single partner company and cleared on to that nation’s aircraft through a service engineer modification (SEM). A change to an aircraft cleared by a single nation through national auspices can only be changed by that nation’s EPC.

Although recent Drops have been done nationally changes are not now just by BAE Systems, but by national support centres in Germany, too.

Andy Lumb, BAE’s Head of Typhoon architecture Engineering, explained in 2014, “Drop 1 started in 2009, then came Drop 2 which went out to UK fleet but the Germans took the radar standard to Alaska; Drop 3 is a 24 month programme being rolled out to all four nations and should be released by end of the year and then there is Drop 4.”

Some of the Drop 2 improvements on the German aircraft could not be tested until getting to Eielson AFB – another reason for pushing the aircraft into Distant Frontier.

Such was the rush to get the work done, the two seater-Eurofighter had its software upgrade just two days into the exercise after gaining the necessary authority from German High Command just hours before.

Four Drops:
1. Small displays and controls, symbology color etc
2. Integration updates to radar
3. Tr1 Evolutionary Package 1 (Tr1EP1) which goes right across all core programmes
4. MIDS, attack and identification radar and Tranche 1 developments

IPA1/ZJ699 will in 2014 continue with evolution of software packages and is currently flying Drop 3 and will move onto Drop 4 later in year, which include MIDS and HMSS improvements for Tranche 1 aircraft. The jet is also going to be used for continuation of Meteor BVRAAM firings.

As well as T2EP2, Alenia is also involved in the Drop internationalisation: there have been four Drops which are additional/enhanced functions developed by the nations for Tranche 1. There will be four flights on that and ten for new radar software development. Tranche 3 Common Obsolescence Removal Programme CORP is also being undertaken which will test Tranche 3 equipment loaded with newly developed software like P1Ea and P1Eb.

In terms of avionics, there will be a programme of common obsolescence removal programmes (CORPs) for some avionics boxes, whereby some will come out and new ones go in.

Until the introduction of P1Ea software in March 2014, none of the four nations had Tranche 2 aircraft with air-to-ground capabilities.

On a bombing run, the Tranche 1 aircraft needed to detect with its electronic countermeasures (ECM) any possible fighter threats. However as soon as you detected the enemy aircraft, selected the AMRAAM to shoot, fired it and turned, then went back into the air-to-surface mode the jet’s system didn’t let you. Basically, once you switched out you couldn’t switch in, I call it ‘switch role’.

The P1E integration is split into two. P1Ea, released in 2013, provides the first part of weapons integration and first part of all laser designator pod functional enhancements. P1Ea gives a real swing role attack aircraft with a genuine weapon capability; but not with all the weapon’s potential. The bombs being put on the Eurofighter under P1E, the 2,000lb EGBU 16 Paveway II and 500lb Paveway IVs are very clever because they can detect the target, angle of attack, elevation of attack and change fuse-settings on the aircraft. This is where P1Eb comes in.

“We couldn’t do all that in one go, so we phased it,” says Hilditch. “P1Ea gave the basic bomb capabilities and P1Eb gave all the exciting options.” He goes on. “For example, the customer might want six Paveway IVs to hit a bomb dump, air traffic control, hangars and vehicles in one pass and then, in the cockpit, the pilot will be given a ‘launch acceptable
region’.

“He can say ‘I want to hit the bomb dump with a bomb straight down the chimney, I want to attack the control tower with a bomb at certain angle and I want to take that radar out with an air burst.’ This can be programmed so the system works out the LAR, which gives the bomb enough energy to come in from right, energy from top and/or to do an air burst. Basically, what it wants to do.

“We couldn’t do all that so we gave the beginnings of swing role aircraft in P1Ea and then we gave all the really clever stuff in P1Eb. In the Gulf War we needed six Tornados to do that to an airfield. With a Typhoon you can do it with one aircraft, one pilot and one pass. With an LDP the system automatically drop them in GPS or lases automatically as you pass through, knowing where the first bomb goes, laser moves, hits the next; laser moves, hits next; laser moves, hits the next!”

Development of the Phase 1 Enhancement b (P1Eb) software by BAE Systems will see the first Typhoon with this new configuration being delivered in mid-2014. Air Cdre Waterfall elaborates, “P1EB on Tranche 2 gives Typhoon the true multi-role capability, allowing Paveway IV to integrate with its Litening pod. Enabling us to drop at the moment of our choosing, on targets of our choosing with a multitude of fuse settings, impact angles

The aircrews and P1Eb aircraft will be prepared to conduct multi-role operations from April 1, 2015 with either 1 or 6 (F) Squadron at RAF Lossiemouth

The company [Eurofighter] is now delivering Tranche 2 aircraft to Block 11 standard [a Italia] , central to which is the EOC-1 (Enhanced Operational Capability 1) software.
The Rafael Litening III laser-designating and targeting pod (currently operated by the AMX aircraft and now being integrated into the Tornado fleet) is likely to be qualified for the Italian F-2000As – given that Tranche 2 and Tranche 3A aircraft will have the EOC-1 software necessary for them to deliver air-to-ground munitions.

P2EA:
- también pod LDP avanzado (A Lockheed Martin Sniper targeting pod is displayed below the full-scale model here. Hilditch said that fourth-generation pods like this can be integrated as part of P2E: http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/ ... ming-clear )

Phase 2 Enhancement (P2E) will introduce yet more additional capability that includes the Taurus and Storm Shadow conventionally armed stand-off cruise missiles (CASOM), and the Meteor air-to-air missile. Under current plans, P2E will be delivered on two separate software releases P2EA by the end of 2015 and P2EB by the first quarter of 2017. Work to integrate Storm Shadow/Taurus CASOMs as part of P2EA is now under way with initial flight testing due before the end of the year.
And what about other capabilities such as suppression/destruction of enemy air defences, anti-ship missiles, long-range glide bombs, reconnaissance and more advanced targeting pods? BAE Systems confirmed that studies and plans are ongoing.

Se firma la EP2 para la T2 (T2EP2), que es igual a la P2EA que es igual que el SRP14 step 1 (Scorpion: http://typhoon.starstreak.net/forum/vie ... &start=210) , el 30 de octubre de 2013:
New Development Contract for Eurofighter Typhoon
Oct 30, 2013

A major new Development Contract which will pave the way for continuous capability enhancements of the Eurofighter Typhoon has been signed by Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH and the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA).

The package (known as Evolution Package 2) will be delivered by the end of 2015. The Contract signing was announced on Wednesday 30th October in South Korea at the Seoul International Aerospace & Defence Exhibition 2013.

Evolution Package 2 consists of a number of improvements including enhancements to the major avionics sensor such as the Radar and the Defensive Aids Sub Systems (DASS) of the Eurofighter Typhoon. It also includes enhancements designed to cater for the latest operational requests of Customers and important enhancements to the Multifunction Information and Distribution System (MIDS). In addition, the package will include further improvements to the Flight Control System (FCS) and the Utility Control System (UCS) that will allow the Eurofighter Typhoon to be more compatible with evolving requirements within the Commercial Aviation air space environment.

Alberto Gutierrez, Chief Executive Officer of Eurofighter GmbH, said: “The signature of this Contract represents a significant milestone for what is known as the Phase 2 Enhancement programme for the Eurofighter Typhoon. It brings with it a whole raft of enhancements designed to ensure the capability package we offer our customers is the best on offer anywhere in the world.”

Jesus Pinillos Prieto, General Manager of NETMA, said: “Eurofighter Typhoon was designed, from the outset, for capability growth, and this package of enhancements is further evidence that we are building on this fundamental strength. It is something we firmly believe sets us apart from the competition.”

This new Development Contract follows the Meteor Integration Contract signed at the Paris Air Show in June 2013. It secures the integration of the world’s most advanced next generation Beyond Visual Range Air-to-Air Missile on to the Eurofighter Typhoon.

Eurofighter Typhoon Path Becoming Clear
Dubai Air Show » 2013
by Chris Pocock
November 18, 2013

The path to a fully multi-role Eurofighter Typhoon is finally becoming clear. At a media briefing here tomorrow (Wednesday), the company hopes to announce the first test flight in Italy of an aircraft carrying the MBDA Storm Shadow cruise missile. The jet’s full operational clearance to drop smart bombs came recently. Meanwhile one of the prototypes will fly next spring with the Selex AESA radar.

Neither the Storm Shadow nor the AESA radar is yet under contract. There have been media reports that Saudi Arabian money is funding these integrations. Laurie Hilditch, Eurofighter capability manager, told AIN here Monday that these were being funded by industry. However, the four European partner nations for Eurofighter have agreed the scope of “evolution packages” (EPs) that add such capability. The EP2 package was recently signed, for delivery by the end of 2015. It contains various avionics and other upgrades, including modifications to the jet’s current Captor-M radar to allow firing of the MBDA Meteor BVRAAM.

Hilditch said that the program “was trying to make intelligent choices about weapons integration–the choices and sequence.” The Storm Shadow integration will likely form part of the Phase 2B Enhancement Package (P2E-B) for delivery by 2017. The equivalent German weapon–the KEPD 350 Taurus–will also soon fly on a test aircraft (IPA7 in Germany) “because the aerodynamics read across to the Storm Shadow clearance.”

Dubai Show Mock-up

While a Royal Air Force Typhoon flies in the aerial display here in Dubai, the full-scale model of the Eurofighter on the static display line is sporting conformal fuel tanks (CFTs) for the first time. These are being proposed to export customers, rather than the four European partners, although the latest-production Tranche 3 jets for Germany, Italy, Spain and UK do make structural provision for their carriage. According to Hilditch, the CFTs provide weapons carriage flexibility as well as longer range in air-surface missions. “Our preferred long-range attack configuration is two Storm Shadows, one on each center-wing pylon, plus CFTs and a supersonic fuel tank on the centerline. That allows us to retain the full air-to-air missile set for the swing role.”

A Lockheed Martin Sniper targeting pod is displayed below the full-scale model here. Hilditch said that fourth-generation pods like this can be integrated as part of P2E. The four partner nations chose the Israeli Litening pod, so the alternative Thales Damocles pod was integrated as part of the Al-Salam contract for the Royal Saudi Air Force. Of note, the Royal Saudi Air Force already flies the Sniper pod.

A model of the Selex E-scan (AESA) radar with its moving, wide-field-of-view antenna can be found in the Eurofighter display building outside the main hall. Debate rages between rival radar houses about the pros and cons of repositioning AESA arrays, but Hilditch said, “We’ve done a lot of work on the e-scan proposal.” Eurofighter is planning to fly two jets with the E-scan radar, the single-seat IPA5 and the twin-seat IPA8. “The E-scan radar will be available to the market when our current and potential customers need it,” the company said.

Eurofighter has made only passing reference to the electronic attack (EA) possibilities that are an inherent capability of AESA radars. The UK is known to be funding research into the waveforms required for EA under the Bright Adder program. This capability would likely be added as part of a Phase 3 Enhancement (P3E) package sometime after 2017.

P3E could also include anti-ship missiles (AShMs), which are likely to be required by current and future export customers. At the last Dubai Airshow, Eurofighter displayed a Marte AShM, but the Saab Rbs15 was in the offer that Eurofighter made to the Indian air force. Hilditch said that the customers could decide which AShMs they prefer.

Meteor: Initial certification work for Meteor integration with the P2E software includes a new series of environmental data gathering trials using production standard missiles. These are already under way in Spain and will be followed by two Meteor guided-firings (known as F1 and F2) at the Aberporth range.
A further six firings (F3 to F8), each designed to increase the Meteor’s launch envelope from Typhoon, are scheduled over the next 18 months. A working group from No.41(R) Test and Evaluation Squadron will provide input that will be particularly important for the operationally representative firings at the end of the firing campaign.

Storm Shadow: Italian aerospace company Alenia Aeronautica is leading the integration of the Storm Shadow conventionally armed stand-off cruise missile (CASOM) on Typhoon.
The Alenia weapons integration team based in Turin has already gained clearance for flutter, FCS and loads in preparation for air vehicle integration trials to be flown in Italy by the end of 2013.
The flutter characteristics of the aircraft will change because of the shape and size of the missile (Storm Shadow is 5.10m/16.8ft long, and weighs 1,300kg/2,866lb).
Other trials will follow during the first quarter of 2014. All Storm Shadow flight trials will involve two load configurations comprising one or two missiles carried on the centre wing pylons.
The current Typhoon-Storm Shadow trial programme is due to start before the end of this year and run for 18 to 24 months. BAE Systems will lead on avionics integration and weapon system performance which occur in the latter stages of the Storm Shadow trials. Under the current plan, BAE Systems will conduct its first test flights in 2014.

P2EC:
- Misil Brimstome (SPEAR 2) (2017/18)
(Y también, según Scorpion, la posibilidad de usar el radaraltímetro hasta 15.000 pies: "RAD ALT limit is currently 5000 ft and yes such limits might be said for example when there is a minimum height defined during dogfight training. With rather modest modifications RAD ALT performance can be increased, about 15000 ft ist targeted as part of "export capabilities" under P2Ec.")

(Y recuerdo: módulos GaN, no GaAs).

"Scorpion, febrero 2013: Block 5 doesn't say to much. Capability is defined by PSCs and SRPs, T1 AC have evolved continuously and they are still being upgraded with the next major step being the T1 Evolution Package 1 which is centred around Drop 3 and will include a number of other changes, including further induction of T2 hardware to increase commonality/interchangability.
http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthre ... 426&page=6

"As far as Bob Smith said, the remaining A-G related bits of Drops 2 and 3 form part of the next Phase Enhancement after P1EB, not the next Enhancement Package. I'll PM you the designation of this as I don't want to write it here before the Combat article appears.
According to Laurie Hilditch at Farnborough EP1 was a relatively minor 'tidy up' and consisted of radio and CAMU mods and small, 'low level obsolescence removal' after Block 9.
Drop 3 was CP180, 181 or 182....."

"By the way the discussion between Jon and me concerning the Evolution Package 1 can be clarified. There are two EP1s, the first one is related to Tranche two aircraft and is being introduced. The tranche 1 EP1 is somethig else yet to come as I have explained before."
...
As said you need to differentiate between Evolution Package 1 for Tranche 1 and Evolution Package 1 for Tranche 2 as both are entirely unrelated.

T2EP1 is introduced with the latest block 11 aircraft and covers some minor enhancements to the recording equipment, a HUD fix and a new flare dispenser.

T1EP1 is still under development and will be an enhancements package for Tranche 1 aircraft that will be introduced around 2015 for the core nations and which is also offered to Austria. T1EP1 is centred around drop 3 and the R2P radar software (internationalisation) as well as some T2 avionic hardware and elements of CORP1 (Common Obsolescence Removal Programme). CORP is part of the Supplement 4 contract, which most people know as the "Tranche 3A contract", but Supplement 4 not only covered T3A, but CORP as well.

CORP is split into two parts. CORP1 primarily covers new cockpit hardware such as a new HUD (phase 1), new MHDDs etc. as well as some new navigation hardware (new GPS receiver and GPWS). CORP2 will cover many more new hardware including DASS, radar, PIRATE, INS etc. These hardware changes are in some cases on a SRI level and in other cases on a LRI level. CORP is being step wise implemented, i.e. not all CORP1 & 2 elements will be introduced at once, but step wise. Block 15 aircraft will be the first T2 examples to introduce CORP1 elements, T1EP1 will introduce some elements on T1 aircraft and further CORP1 & CORP2 elements or full content are being added under upcoming upgrades such as Drop 4 for T1s, for block 20 and later block 25 aircraft and likely as a retrofit for existing aircraft.

Scorpion, julio 2013:
T2EP2 which should soon be announced as on contract will bring some pretty nice capability enhancements with it. Drop 3 is basically through its developmental testing stage and work on Drop 4 is already in parts on the road. Add the recently signed Meteor integration contract, Captor-E that has always been an active development programme since FSD launched [julio 2010] and a number of other development activities that may sooner or later be announced, but that are already underway.

The idea is years old and essentially it's one large display that can display a range of information in various windows. A concept pursued by Boeing's upgrade proposals for the F-15 and F/A-18 and not too dissimilar to the F-35s layout either.

P5E is too far in the future and there are only suggestions right now, a new cockpit of that kind is one of the ideas. However everything is subject to change as long as requirements are allowed to evolve and as long as no development contract is awarded. There are some clear ideas for P3E and P4E wrt export capabilities and core capabilities. But as said nothing is fix yet.
So what ideas are been thrown around for P3E and P4E ?

Nothing that I'm keen to talk about at this point in time.

There have been several airframe changes over the years. In fact many minor detail changes. However, most of the changes require no airframe modifications as new avionic LRIs are usually replacing existing ones. Of course there are several provisions for future growth as well. The more recent T2 blocks feature provisions for the future DASS enhancements 4 & 5 for example. Block 20 aircraft feature upgraded generators, additional cooling, provisions for a future general purpose mission computer, MIL STD 1760E compliant wiring and a high speed fibre optical network complementary the the existing busses.

(DASS Enhancements 4 & 5:
Step 4: Increased ESM frequency coverage in lower bands (C/0.5 GHz-1 GHz).
Step 5: Digital ESM receivers with increased accuracy, sensitivity (emission detection below noise level) and targeting support.)

I said provisions for these enhancements [of DASS]. Implementation is currently scheduled for P3E/SRP16 and P4E/SRP18 respectively. P2EA/SRP14 step 1 will be centred around T2EP2 which will introduce UK DASS enhancements on T2 aircraft, plus further improvments taking advantage of the new hardware introduced with block 11 as well as some display enhancements and fixes for the DASS and improved chaff dispensers.

What many still haven't recognised is the very fact that the days of quadrinational agreements being a pre-condition to launch developments are gone in the Eurofighter programme. There is still some concurrency with regards to engineering resources and flight test assets, but these are the only stumbling blocks. Every customer can now outline his national requirements and schedules. If authorised by national authorities any customer can trigger the development of national upgrades and if they affect part that lay within the responsibility of another partner company they can contract it to perform the work required. Other customers join these programmes or buy into it afterwards if they want to do it, enabling the originator to recover some of the costs. In many cases it is tried to merge these national developments with quadrinational developments at a later stage and in some cases one nations developments are adopted by another one on a national base as well. It's still the policy to bring as many partners aboard as possible for the major upgrades at least to spread development costs over multiple partners and to benefit from the economy of scales during the retrofit phase. There are several examples for this such as the austere A/S capability package, the R2P/Q & T2P/Q radar softwares, the UK DASS Enhancements, the German sort lines, the Italian PIRATE firmware upgrade or the Saudis integration of the Damocles LDP, to name a few prominent examples.

The way how the Eurofighter programme production and capabilities
...
The approach within the Eurofighter and F-35 programme is pretty much similar. A block 3I is not up to block 3F and the US armed forces actually introduced block 1 examples that are pretty limited in functionality and capability as were those earlier blocks of the Typhoon. Tranche 1 was never supposed to start with a block 5, the approach was always phased and spread over multiple production blocks which represent the smallest breakdown of the production, followed by the intermediate batches and the tranches as top level of PRODUCTION orders. Capabilities of the Typhoon are described by PSCs and SRPs.
...
The requirements for Typhoon were laid out in the WSPS which was part of the MDC. The production was covered separetly with the umbrella contract and the fix price tranche contracts which included an inflation clause. It was planned that the aircraft would enter service in an EIS version (block 1), followed by the IOC variant (block 2) and finally the FOC version (block 5). Block 5 aircraft didn't pose all the capabilities and functionalitied as laid out in the WSPS, so yes the customer accepted a lower spec version, while continuing to receive aircraft. The MDC was concluded with SRP 4.1 with the last aircraft delivered being confugred that way. Even SRP 4.1 still missed out some stuff, mostly clearances and software glitches. SRP 4.3 represents the full standard, but has been contracted separately. This incurred additional costs, but also covered stuff beyond the WSPS. All other developments such as the Drops, P1E etc. were never part of the MDC, so claiming these costs as part of the original contracrts is plain wrong. The tranches themselves never defined any capability level to begin with. There is no "substandard" wrt T2 and T3A production standard as such were never defined or contracted in the first place!
In addition the F-35's blocks are indeed capability related, Typhoon's blocks aren't per definition.

http://forum.keypublishing.com/showthre ... tes/page20

The war itself did force planners to make some adjustments. For instance, at the outset of the campaign, training was accelerated to teach personnel how to load the cryptological codes for secure radio communications. That was not due until later. Similarly, a software update was delivered, called SM167, which made adjustments in the displays, including how air-to-ground information is entered. The RAF also had to validate that the Litening III targeting pod is category two accuracy compliant to be cleared to hand off targeting data, Patounas says.

Cita CORP:
MIL-STD-1553B = STANAG 3838. all these designations define standards only. MIL-STD-1760 is the definition for a weapons interface bus which is essentially MIL-STD-1553B compliant. Block 20 aircraft [el primero de la T3A] will introduce a weapons interface bus compliant with the MIL-STD-1760E which is a fibre optic network. Block 20s also feature provisions for a new general purpose mission computer (GPMC) and the aforementioned HSDN (high speed data network, se refiere a que la T3A tiene mayor capacidad de transferencia de datos de alta velocidad para aprovechar el incremento de datos del AESA).

There are also upgrades to the generators, ECS and DASS hardware to offer more growth for future developments. The CORP programme is also a largely unknown quantity, though it has been part of the Supplement 4 contract that most know as T3A. 2.5 bln € from the 9.1 bln € Supplement 4 contract are allocated to CORP which covers development of new LRIs and SRIs to eliminate obsolescences and provide more growth. CORP as such isn't T3 specific and elements of it are being step by step introduced on T1 and T2 aircraft.

As far as T3B is concerned the decision window is closing. The core nations won't opt for it, but a major export contract may lead to T3B or not. The final 24 Saudi Typhoons and the 12 for Oman are simply a T3A extension that means that 136 aircraft are built under T3A acc. current contracts. A dedicated production block is induced for Oman.

Y sobre el radar AESA:

As far as Captor-E is concerned Eurofighter has a clear roadmap how this radar should evolve hardware and software wise. Radar 1 is merely the initial hardware standard with the AESA and its repositioner, the new antenna power supply and controller, but retaining the processor and receiver of the current Captor-M with some modifications. Radar 1 is offered to export customers who require an "early" AESA capability and it will be used to assess the radar and its capabilities by the core nations. Radar 1 will evolve in two stages and radar 2 will implement new hardware and software capabilities. Radar 3 is likely to become a further upgraded variant. There are a number of software and hardware modules planned for continous insertion. That's the reason why the radar will come late for the core nations as they want to wait for a more mature and advanced product, instead of taking the AESA at its earliest opportunity. The radar will be introduced as a retrofit to existing aircraft. No current customer has ordered the Captor-E yet, that includes Oman.

And what about the Reconnaissance pods for Typhoon? Will they get a stand alone pod? or will they use RAPTOR?
In the short term the Litening 3 poses a limited reconnaissance capability, a mass memory is installed on the pod and the MMI is adapted to support such functions. A common ICD for Gen 3 & 4 LDPs and RecceLite was supposed to be part of P2Ea, dunno whether it's still current or whether it has been further postponed. Raptor probably doesn't fit.

A Lockheed Martin Sniper targeting pod is displayed below the full-scale model here. Hilditch said that fourth-generation pods like this can be integrated as part of P2E: http://www.ainonline.com/aviation-news/ ... ming-clear

As I have assembled this post over at KP, I thought I'm going to share it here as well...

So what lies ahead this year?

1.) After the first flight of BS0116 [primer T3A] late last year, we are looking at the completion of qualification and clearance for the T3A EIS [¿Entry Into Service?] known as block 20.
2.) After the beginning of Storm Shadow integration last year, we'll see further tests to progress the integration, flight testing of the KEPD-350 Taurus is slatted to begin as well.
3.) After accomplishment of the P1Eb/SRP12 flight trials late last year all evidence has been produced and existing aircraft can finally be upgraded, after they have received their national clearances.
4.) Drop 3 flight trials are basically complete and induction on RAF T1 Typhoons should follow in the not to distant future, probably followed by the Luftwaffe and other customers from 2015 onwards.
5.) Drop 4 development is well underway and flight tests should begin in summer.
6.) Captor-E flight trials will begin on IPA5 [en breve] and will be supported by IPA8 from ~summer.
7.) Aerodynamic modifications known as the Aero Mod Kit [ AMK] are probably flight tested this year as well. [de siguiente mensaje suyo: The engine vibration issues have been solved with modifications on the EJ200 MK101-G201 (T2 standard engine). The AMK includes the strakes (modified ones, not exactly the same as those on DA5), new fuselage strakes and extended flaperons.]
8.) P2Ea/T2EP2 development is well underway since quite some time, even before the formal contract was signed on 30th October last year. Flight tests may also begin towards the end of the year or possibly from early 2015.
9.) Meteor integration will be progressed as are certain elements for the next stage P2Eb/T2EP3 prior signature of another contract (I'm not too optimistic this happens this year)
10.) Export campaigns, right now it doesn't look too well in the UAE, but there is still hope in the Middle East, but I'm once again not too optimistic that a new customer will be found this year. Hopefully the UK and KSA [Kingdom of Saudi Arabia] can conclude negotiations on the revised SALAM deal.
[De siguiente mensaje suyo: SPEAR 3 flight trials were also planned for later this year 2014, but only in support of the weapons development programme only.]

Note: Everything being said must be consumed with care as it might be subject to changes.

 Scorpion en marzo 2014 http://typhoon.starstreak.net/forum/vie ... &start=240:
Scorpion: EP3 will almost certainly be THE elementary part of P2Eb as T2EP2 forms the core of P2Ea!
AIR International monthly (November 2013):
Phase 2 Enhancement (P2E) will introduce yet more additional capability that includes the Taurus and Storm Shadow conventionally armed stand-off cruise missiles (CASOM), and the Meteor air-to-air missile. Under current plans, P2E will be delivered on two separate software releases P2EA by the end of 2015 and P2EB by the first quarter of 2017.

What does mean (P2E will be delivered on two separate software releases
P2EA by the end of 2015 and P2EB by the first quarter of 2017.) ? Does it mean P2EA/SRP14 , P2EB/SRP16 or am I wrong?

Scorpion: Nope it's supposed to be two revisions of SRP14, refered to as step 1 & 2 respectively. SRP16 would be introduced with P3E which hasn't been contracted yet.
How can the the EP2 and P2EA with the same software release (SRP14 step 1) and each of which introduced with different improvements ?

EP2 = DASS,MIDS,FCS,UCS and the Captor-M radar / will be delivered by the end of 2015

P2EA = integration of Storm Shadow/Taurus stand-off cruise missiles / will be delivered by the end of 2015

P2EB = ??? / will be delivered by the first quarter of 2017

Scorpion: T2P2 is basically part of P2Ea, but it's not the whole P2Ea package. SRP14 step 1 is just the resulting capability standard, while the detailed configuration will be described by the PSC14.XX.XX. The DASS, MIDS, MMI, sensor fusion enhancements etc. will all be part of T2EP2, but the whole P2Ea package includes more such as Storm Shadow integration, a new common ICD for Litening 3/4 and RecceLite and some other stuff.

P2Eb will include T2EP3 among other improvements, such as Meteor integration and will generally result into SRP14 Step 2. At least that was the plan, but as everything is subject to change we may see a different SRP designation or not. Right now I consider it as current until this info is suceeded.
...
Scorpion: I'm not sure whether P2Ec will ever come. Right now it looks like P2E will end with part "b" and the next upgrade package to come will be P3E.

As far as the integration of a new 4th generation LDP is concerned, P2Ea will introduce an ICD that supports functions of the Litening 4. That doesn't equal its integration, but it eases integration if a customer should request its integration. Dunno whether there are commonalities between the messages used by different western LDPs such as Litening 4 or Sniper. If you read what's said by Mr. Hildritch you'll notice that he says "can be" not will be [se refiere a la integración de un nuevo pod de nueva generación, "tal vez" el Sniper].
