Gibraltar railway tunnel between Morocco and Spain

Notapor Far Soldier el Lun Jul 22, 2013 12:44 am

Recently during the visit of the King of Spain to Morocco, the proposed underwater tunnel between Morocco and Spain has gone back on the table. It has even been presented to the UN, who found that it was an interesting idea to connect two continents together.

Personally, I think it is primarily a symbolic project partly because it connects Morocco and Spain, and secondly because it connect Africa to Europe. I think our two countries will benefit on all plans, and it will be a powerful symbol.

I opened this topic to seek advice from forumers on this project, if they are okay or not. The goal is to debate and everyone can give his opinion.

UN reopens the proposed fixed link between Morocco and Spain

A report on the proposed Europe-Africa fixed link through the Strait of Gibraltar, intended to establish a double-track tunnel between Morocco and Spain, has been presented at the substantive session of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) in Geneva.

It covers the activities carried out during the period 2006 - 2013 on the Fixed Link and the proposed program for the period 2013-2015. The project, whose cost of implementation is estimated at more than EUR 5 billion, is designed as a catalyst for the emergence cycle of the Moroccan economy and greater integration between Europe and the Africa.

Along 38 kilometers, the railway tunnel, which will link Morocco to Spain, could emerge in 2025. The campaign offshore drilling for geological survey of seabed at the initial layout of the Europe-Africa fixed link through a railway tunnel was conducted in accordance with the program established by the Company studies the Strait of Gibraltar ( NMCS-Morocco) and the study of the fixed communication through the Strait of Gibraltar (Spain SECEG) Company.

The work of these two public companies entered the feasibility of a tunnel forty kilometers between Tarifa in Spain to the region Malabata near Tanger (310 km north of Rabat), 28 km below the sea at a depth of 300 m. Projections of this mammoth project provide for construction of the railway tunnel in three phases.

This is the first excavation of the underwater section of the service tunnel as gallery recognition and the construction and commissioning of the first railway gallery. The third phase, expected long-term corresponds to the construction of the second tunnel rail depending on the evolution of the first traffic tunnel.

Both single-track rail galleries will be designed in a circular shape with a diameter of 7.5 m. Centered between the two main galleries, gallery service security is pressurized with a circumference of 4.8 m. It communicates between the two main galleries every 340 m. The ability of the monotube tunnel annual traffic of 1.6 million cars, 500,000 trucks, 5 million motorists passengers and 11 million rail passengers. In the final phase, the capacity of the tunnel would be 50 million passengers and 6 million vehicles.

For the United Nations, the project will emerge as "a strong link, continuous and sustainable transport systems in the transcontinental and the Mediterranean. Establishing a fixed link between the European and African continents will not fail to enhance the development potential, positioning itself as a logistics platform of the first order at the global level, "according to the document forwarded by the Secretary General of the UN ECOSOC, which is regularly informed about the related studies.

"At the transcontinental and the Mediterranean Basin, the project will be a strong, continuous and sustainable transport systems link. It will be an intercontinental hub", thanks to its position as a gateway to the Mediterranean door, "the report UN.

At the scale of the riparian countries, Morocco and Spain, the fixed link is an asset in the development program of their rail networks high-speed transport and motorway. The continuity of such networks would increase and diversify the supply of services, to ensure their consistency and reduce the crossing time, the paper concludes the United Nations ..

Who will support finantially this awesome project? I mean, Spain is in finantial dire straits, and I am not sure if EU would like to support such project.

I do like the symbol of unity, but I am not sure if it is economically feasible. I mean, ferry connection between Spanish and Moroccan coasts seems to work well. I haven't any professional connection with this subject, so I cannot evaluate properly if the return of investment of such a project would be credible or not.

Edit: I would add that Spanish public is more and more exceptic about big infraestructure projects. Think that we have a lot of high speed train lines, some of which are not economically feasible, and a damn lot of new airports, a lot of them not economically feasible too.

Buenas.
