Russian Navy Set to Acquire New Transport Vessel

Moscow, 20 December: The Zvezdochka sea transport will roll off the assembly lines of the Zvezdochka shipyard, based in Severodvinsk, on Thursday [20 December], Aide to the Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Commodore Igor Dygalo told Interfax-AVN.
"The Zvezdochka sea transport is a multi-role vessel, designed to transport large and bulky naval materiel and containers, research and test hardware, mines, torpedoes, and missiles," Dygalo said.
The vessel is also designed to tow, load, unload, and test naval materiel and armament, detect and surface sunken ships, provide combat support to warships, and carry out search-and-rescue operations.
The vessel has been designed by the Almaz Central Naval Design Bureau. The Zvezdochka shipyard started building it in 2004.
Mooring, factory, sea, and state trials are slated for 2008.

MOSCOW, December 25 (Itar-Tass) -- The big antisubmarine ship “Admiral Levchenko”under the flag of Commander of the Russian Northern Fleet Vice-Admiral Nikolai Maksimov and the big sea tanker “Sergei Osipov”on Tuesday called at the Mediterranean port and main naval base of Tunisia - - Bizerta.
“The chief aim of the unofficial visit of the ships of the Russian Northern Fleet to the port of Bizerta, made after a 15-year break, is to further strengthen friendly relations and mutually advantageous cooperation between Russia and Tunisia,”a representative of the Information and Public Relations Service of the Northern Fleet said.
