Fossett flies to non-stop record
Feb. 11th, 2006
Adventurer Steve Fossett has broken the record for the longest non-stop flight in aviation history, landing in dramatic fashion after power failure.
Fossett, 61, took the record as he flew over Shannon in Ireland. In total he has flown 26,389.3 miles around the globe since lift-off on Wednesday.
(...)
He landed shortly after 1700 GMT after 76 hours and 45 minutes in the cockpit.
He eclipsed the distance record set by Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, who logged 40,212km (24,987 miles) during a non-stop, non-refuelled trip around the globe in their Voyager aircraft in 1986.
Fossett's record attempt suffered a potential setback when the plane lost 4% of its fuel during takeoff from Florida.
Mission engineers had warned that it would be touch and go to whether there was sufficient fuel.
Fossett already has 109 records to his name, in many sporting fields.

Fixed-wing unmanned aircraft are Air Force's best near-space
Posted on: Feb. 15th, 2006 - aimpoints.hq.af.mil
More so than balloons and airships, high-flying unmanned aircraft are the best near-term option for the Air Force to exploit the untapped region of "near space" for persistent overhead observation, information gathering and communications relay, according to a just-published study by the Air Force's senior group of technical advisers.
Long-endurance, fixed-winged unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) like Northrop Grumman [NOC]'s RQ-4 Global Hawk could provide viable alternatives to low-earth-orbit satellites for such missions by the end of the decade, when operating in around-the-clock rotations, the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board (AFSAB) reported in its study "Persistence at 'Near Space' Altitudes."
Stealth jets bound for 'boneyard'
Posted on: Feb. 16th, 2006 - www.reviewjournal.com
The black jets that revolutionized air warfare with their radar-evading technology and ability to drop precision-guided bombs at night are to be discarded in 2008, 20 years after the Air Force acknowledged the stealth fighters' existence, officials said.
Capt. Michelle Lai, an Air Force spokeswoman at the Pentagon, said Wednesday that "right now the overall plan is being worked out," but most if not all of the nation's 52 F-117A Nighthawks are expected to go to "the boneyard": Davis-Monthan Air Force Base near Tucson, Ariz., where rows upon rows of scrapped planes cover acres of desert.
The Nighthawks are priced at $45 million apiece, not counting costs for research and development, according to an Air Force fact sheet.
A chapter in naval aviation history drew to a close Feb. 8 aboard USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71) with the last recovery of an F-14 Tomcat from a combat mission.
Piloted by Capt. William G. Sizemore II, commander, Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 8, Fighter Squadron (VF) 213's aircraft 204 was trapped at 12:35 a.m. and marked one of the final stages of the Navy's transition from the F-14 to F/A-18 E/F Super Hornet. “It's the end of an era and it just kind of worked out that I was the last trap,”said Sizemore.
“This is one of the best airplanes ever built, and it's sad to see it go away. It's just a beautiful airplane. It's powerful, it has presence, and it just looks like the ultimate fighter.”Lt. Bill Frank, a VF-31 pilot, also took part in the last mission, and is credited with being the last pilot to ever drop a bomb from an F-14 Tomcat.
“We were called on to drop, and that's what we did,”said Frank. “It's special and it's something I can say I did, but what's more important is the work of the Sailors who made it possible. They have worked so hard during this cruise to make every Tomcat operational.”
Space Adventures announced its plans to develop a commercial spaceport in Ras Al-Khaimah (the UAE), with plans to expand globally.
Other potential spaceport locations include Asia, specifically Singapore, and North America. The total estimated cost of the global spaceport development project is at least $265 million (USD) and will be funded by various parties, along with shared investments by Space Adventures and the government of Ras Al-Khaimah.
The company, which organized orbital flights for all of the world's private space explorers, also announces that His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi of Ras Al-Khaimah, along with the UAE Department of Civilian Aviation, have granted clearance to operate suborbital spaceflights in their air space.
The UAE spaceport, planned to be located less than an hour drive from Dubai, already has commitments for $30 million (USD). "I am proud to announce Ras Al-Khaimah as the site where suborbital commercial space travel will begin and flourish.
Space Adventures is the pioneer of space tourism, which is why we signed an agreement with them nearly a year ago and began this project. After we initiate operations here, we look forward to expanding operations outside of the United Arab Emirates.
In this regard, I would also like to announce that we have committed an additional $30 million (USD) of funding for global spaceport development. We are most excited about spearheading this multi-billion dollar industry," said His Highness Sheikh Saud Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, the Crown Prince of Ras Al-Khaimah, United Arab Emirates.

Putin unites Russian aircraft makers
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed the decree “On Open Joint Stock Company United Aircraft Building Corporation,”the presidential press service reported. The federal government will have a 75 percent in the new corporation.
The United Aircraft Building Corporation will include Russia's leading aircraft makers: the Sukhoi Aviation Holding Company (Moscow), the MiG Russian Plane Building Corporation (Moscow), the Ilyushin Aviation Company, the Tupolev Company (Moscow), the Kazan Aviation Production Association, the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Production Association, the Nizhny Novgorod Aircraft Building Plant Sokol, and the Novosibirsk Aviation Production Association.
All these companies were removed from the list of Russia's strategic assets. The MiG Russian Plane Building Corporation and the Komsomolsk-on-Amur Aviation Production Association will be transformed into open joint stock companies fully owned by the government.
Within the framework of the project, a government commission will be set up to ensure integration of Russia's aircraft building sector.
The United Aircraft Building Corporation will “develop, produce, sell, provide maintenance services, modernize, repair and recycle civil and military aviation equipment in the interests of state and other customers, including foreigners, and it will also introduce new technologies and designs in the area of aircraft building,”the decree says.
Earlier reports said it would take from nine months to one year for the country's aircraft builders to unite. The head of the single corporation will be determined before the end of this year.
The united corporation will have four business units, called Combat Aviation, Civil Aviation, Military Transport and Special Aviation, and Hubs and Components. The government will have a 55-60 percent stake in the company whose annual turnover is expected to be between $8.2 billion and $8.5 billion.
A year ago, in February 2005, Russian President Vladimir Putin assigned the government to prepare a draft decree on creating a united aircraft building company that would unite all domestic aircraft makers, becoming one of the world's top five plane builders. The combined revenue of the single corporation was projected to be about $2.5 billion a year.
The decision to set up such a company was made back in 1999, but words did not translate into action until 2004, when first steps were made to implement the project. The single corporation could be established before the end of next year. It may be modeled on America's Boeing or the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (EADS).
The creation of the single aircraft building corporation will allow Russia to produce up to 120 civil aircraft a year. Today, the country's aircraft making industry makes only nine planes a year.
