Tranche 1 Typhoon Aircraft Receive Upgrade
Source: BAE Systems. June 21, 2012
The Royal Air Force Tranche 1 fleet are to be upgraded following the recent delivery of the Drop 2 upgrade package.
Following the closure of the Tranche 1 Main Development Contract between NETMA and Eurofighter, the UK established a Capability Sustainment Team within BAE Systems. This team was initially utilised to develop an upgrade called Tranche 1 Drop1 that subsequently saw active service as part of the Typhoon Fleet deployed in support of Operation ELLAMY in Libya.
Following development of the Tranche 1 Drop 1 package, European partner Nations were invited to participate in the development programme. The second upgrade package, known as Drop 2, is now entering service with the Royal Air Force, having been developed through a Mutual Support Agreement between Nations that involved BAE Systems and the SUZ organisation based at Manching, Germany.
The Drop 2 product will provide capability updates to a wide range of Typhoon avionic systems covering the Displays and Controls, Attack and Identification, Defensive Aids and Communication Sub Systems whilst also delivering availability and sustainability improvements to the Tranche 1 Fleet.
The first flight of a Tranche 1 Typhoon with the new product embodied took place at RAF Coningsby on 2nd May 2012 and was conducted by 17(R) Test and Evaluation Squadron, where it will continue to be assessed over the coming months ahead of its roll out to the Tranche 1 fleet.
Following the successful first flight, Robert Forshaw, Drops Desk Officer within the MOD Defence Equipment &Support Fast Air Support Typhoon team said: "The success of this upgrade programme has demonstrated the ability of BAE Systems to deliver Weapon System improvements, integrated with a tailored support solution, to the Royal Air Force in collaboration with their Industrial partners.
The team have overcome some significant challenges to get to this stage and that's testament to the working relationships between BAE Systems, the German SUZ and QinetiQ teams involved in the project. I would like to pass on my personal thanks to everyone involved in the project and I look forward to working with them again on the Drop 3 and 4 programmes." [el drop 3 es la clave del Evolution Package 1 EP1]
Andy Flynn, Head of Contract Engineering Services for NETMA said: "This close working relationship is an integral part of how we will work as a management and delivery team on Contract 1 - the engineering services contract which is the first tangible delivery of a joint transformation programme between Industry and NETMA. Contracts 1 and 4 were signed in March 2012.

En la reunión del G-20 en México, la primera ministra alemana ha presionado al indio preguntando sobre el rechazo del Tiffie de cara al MMRCA y apoyando su reentrada. El indio dice que no se replanteará la elección del Rafale:
The Ministry of Defence (MOD) recognises the benefit Typhoon orders can have on our own Typhoon acquisition programme. That is why Ministers and officials from the MOD are engaged in an active and innovative defence diplomacy initiative to promote Typhoon and other British defence and security exports.
As well as when meeting direct overseas counterparts, Ministers and officials are engaging in extensive consultation on Typhoon at all levels.
The following table shows when each Minister and senior official last held discussions with their direct counterpart. In the case of the Defence Senior Advisor Middle East, who has no direct counterpart, his last engagement with Ministers or officials from that country are recorded. Discussions about exports, including Typhoon, form a routine part of such international engagements.

Drops go out to Drop 5.
They are the means by which additional functionalities and capabilities are being added to Tranche 1 aircraft, in advance of the FOC standard (SRP 4.3) after which the Main Development Contract ended, and which was once expected to be the final standard for Tranche 1 jets.
Drop 1 is in service (UK only).
The final iteration of Drop 2 is now flying on service aircraft and will soon be in service (UK and Germany). [Ésta es la noticia de la semana pasada]
Drop 3 is flying on IPAs. Spain is coming on board.
Drop 4 is being defined.
Drop 5 is some way off yet.
Chunks of the Drops have been incorporated in P1E, while elements from Tranche 2 have been rolled into the Drops.
The Drops are separate to Restore (which includes Strongbow).

MBDA sharpens Spear missile design for F-35 integration
27/06/2012
...
the Spear concept would use a turbojet engine and a wing kit to provide a stand-off range of about 100km (54nm).
MBDA says it will be about 2m (6.5ft) long, carry a multi-effect warhead and use a multimode seeker. The high subsonic-speed weapon will also feature INS/GPS guidance, and be able to receive mid-course updates via an onboard datalink.
...
MBDA plans to contract a European supplier to develop a new, lightweight, two-round rail launcher for the Spear missile, and says it has also identified a number of potential engine suppliers.
Beyond its application for internal carriage by the stealthy F-35, MBDA has also released artwork depicting a multi-role-configured Eurofighter Typhoon carrying 16 of the missiles.
