MILAN (AFP) '' The four partner countries in the Eurofighter consortium were on Friday due to sign a contract on production of the first part of the third tranche of the aircraft, sources said Thursday.
"The contract will be signed tomorrow (Friday) in Germany," said an Italian defence ministry source.
"It will be signed at the Eurofighter consortium headquarters at Hallbergmoos, near Munich," an industry source added.
The contract, worth about eight billion euros (11.2 billion dollars), was for 112 of the 236 planes in the third tranche, the source added.
12:18 GMT, July 31, 2009 defpro.com | The NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA), representing the programme nations Germany, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom, today signed a long awaited contract with EUROJET Turbo GmbH and Eurofighter Jagdflugzeug GmbH on behalf of the partner companies Alenia Finmeccanica, BAE Systems, EADS CASA and EADS Deutschland for the first part of third tranche of the Eurofighter Typhoon programme consisting of 112 aircraft and 241 engines worth €9.1 billion (US$12.86 billion) including €1.4 billion for the engines.

With this contract which includes 40 aircraft for the UK, 30 for Germany and 21 each for Italy and Spain, Eurofighter has secured 559 units for production, including 15 for Austria and 72 for Saudi Arabia.
The UK Ministry of Defence says its new commitment is worth around £3 billion ($4.97 billion), making each of its aircraft's unit cost about £75 million. Deliveries to the Royal Air Force will start in 2013, with the aircraft expected to feature "new radar and new weapons". They are likely to "accommodate future installation of additional fuel tanks mounted on the fuselage to greatly increase range and endurance".
BAE Systems says the new aircraft "will be of Tranche 2 standard provisioned with additional capability to deal with projected high-technology future capability enhancements."
The UK wants its future Eurofighters to have new radar, weapons and extended-range capability
