Uncrewed systems will be vital for maintaining UK combat mass, MoD says
according to its newly published Defence Drone Strategy.
“The conflict in Ukraine has become a very visible representation of a ‘new way of war’, one characterised by innovation, the proliferation of technology, digitisation of the battlefield and the need to rapidly deploy capability fit for the tempo of operations,” UK minister for defence procurement
“There is no clearer example than the development and employment of uncrewed systems, where low-cost solutions are increasingly defeating more exquisite capabilities and delivering disproportionate impact on the battlefield.”
The UK has to date donated more than 4,000 drones to Kyiv, with its continued commitment to value over £200 million ($252 million) during 2024.
The MoD notes that its [drone] strategy will be supported “by at least £4.5 billion of investment over the next decade”.

CCA Will Redefine How USAF Counts Its Fighters
March 7, 2024
The Air Force’s ambitious plans to start producing and fielding autonomous, unmanned Collaborative Combat Aircraft are prompting big picture questions about the fighter fleet, Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. David Allvin said March 7.
The number of each aircraft type is less important than how effective CCA prove to be as force multipliers, Allvin told defense leaders.
“In general, I would say if we do not embrace that a key part of future warfighting is going to be mastering human-machine teaming, human-machine integration—if we don’t get that right—I think we have an uphill fight,” Allvin said. “So what that means for the fighter force structure—it starts to blur the lines. What’s a fighter?”
We have to “rethink our definition” of what a fighter is and does, he explained, and instead focus on “how we’re able to bring effects to bear against the adversary.”
