Kuwait has placed a USD 370 million order for 18 Bayraktar TB2
An industry insider told MEE that each Bayraktar TB2 goes for about $5m and each aircraft requires 100 MAM-L smart micro munitions, which together are worth $15m. There is also additional cost for training and command-and-control centres, which varies based on the number of drones purchased. Each centre can control up to six drones.

New signals intelligence role planned for Dutch Reapers

The Netherlands could acquire three signals intelligence (SIGINT)-gathering pods for its General Atomics MQ-9 Reaper, potentially for use from late this year. Announced on 18 January and worth an estimated €50-100 million.

Meanwhile, the defence ministry says its fleet of four Reapers recently passed a combined 1,000 flying hours.
Three of the aircraft are currently based on Curacao in the Caribbean, where a 40-strong detachment of personnel is conducting a test and evaluation activity which is scheduled to run until 1 July.

The Netherlands in June 2022 announced that  it will double its Reaper acquisition to eight air vehicles and also proceed with adding the ability to deploy weapons.
Additional equipment plans for the fleet include the proposed acquisition of four communication relay pods and four maritime surveillance radars, the defence ministry notes.

[German] Eurodrone to be equipped with SIGINT capability
The German... awarded a EUR15 million contract to Hensoldt for the development of a signals intelligence (SIGINT) demonstrator, the company announced on 20 January.
The sensor suite will be integrated into a pod for the Eurodrone platform and will be based on the latest “digitisation, electronic beam-steering, and metallic 3D printing” technologies, some of which have already been developed under Hensoldt's ‘Kalaetron' product family.
A Hensoldt spokesperson confirmed to Janes that the SIGINT sensor suite is intended specifically for the German Eurodrone aircraft.
According to the company, Hensoldt will also develop a system architecture to allow for the integration of the SIGINT capability into the future mission system of the Eurodrone. The SIGINT payload will be capable of networking with other platforms, the company added.

Israel Aerospace Industries unveils POINT BLANK – a hand-launched hybrid electro-optical guided missile [loitering UAS]

IAI, as prime contractor, has been competitively awarded a multi-million-dollar contract by the Irregular Warfare Technical Support Directorate (IWTSD) of the US Department of Defense (DoD) to rapidly develop and deliver “ROC-X” a version of the POINT BLANK system that meets specific US DoD requirements for the purpose of increasing the organic precision strike lethality and survivability of small tactical teams. IAI will provide the first prototypes and training to DoD for Operational Testing & Evaluation in FY 23.
POINT BLANK weighs about 15 lbs and is about 3 ft long. The missile can fly at altitudes above 1,500 ft, at a maximum speed of 178 mph (186 kph) and can hover or loiter in the air while the target’s nature and exact position is confirmed prior to attack.

Kaman to close K-MAX production line
...citing “low demand and variation in annual deliveries, coupled with low profitability and large working capital inventory requirements”. The line is scheduled to close in the first quarter of the fiscal year (FY) 2023, after a 60-platform production run of the specialised cargo helicopter.
In 2010, the US Marine Corps (USMC) purchased two K-MAXs, modified by Lockheed Martin to be optionally manned and designated CQ-24A. From 2011 to 2014, the USMC deployed the K-MAXs to southern Afghanistan, where they flew thousands of resupply missions to deliver 2.04 million kg of cargo to isolated outposts.
Though retired after their return from Afghanistan, the USMC reactivated the K-MAXs in 2021 “to support future unmanned efforts”, said Kaman at the time.

Flashback: F-15 Global Strike Eagle Paths
Jan. 18, 2023

Imagen
https://media.defense.gov/2023/Jan/18/2 ... 2-1012.JPG

...In the mid 1980’s, the Air Force tested the capability of air launching a multistage, anti-satellite ASM-135 missile from beneath an F-15 Eagle in a successful attempt to destroy an orbiting satellite. In 2006, Boeing proposed a similar concept for missile launch, this time using an unmanned variant of the F-15E Strike Eagle with the launch vehicle mounted dorsally instead of ventrally. Boeing designated this variant as the F-15 Global Strike Eagle (GSE). The concept proposed the F-15 GSE as a low-cost demonstration of global strike capability utilizing a variety of munitions including the little-known Common Aero Vehicle (CAV). Defined as a maneuverable, hypersonic reentry vehicle that has the capability of dispensing a variety of payloads inside the atmosphere...

...In the end, the Air Force chose not to pursue this unique air-launched concept, instead the service continues to rely on the use of the venerable Boeing B-52 and B-1B for near-term hypersonic vehicle air-launch capabilities.
