The German Ministry of Defence said that an order for the first batch of the third tranche of Eurofighter will be placed before the summer recess and thus before federal election taking place in September.
This was possible, after Britain said it would go ahead with buying tranche 3A of the aircraft. Germany was pushing on Britain to get the go ahead to authorise payments before national elections in September.
According to the German procedure the parliamentary budget committee has to agree to the purchase.
Even though CAPTOR features a mechanically steered array, BAE Systems have indicated that the low inertia non-counterbalanced antenna coupled with four high torque, high precision samarium-cobalt drive motors allows extremely high scanning speeds. As a consequence of this the radar can interleave different operations such as air and ground mapping. This is quite an achievement for a non-phased array system.
Both challengers unveiled the outlines of a new push to respectively market the F/A-18E/F Super Hornet and Typhoon to Ottawa as replacements for the Canadian air force's Boeing CF-18 (F/A-18A/B) Hornets by the end of the next decade.
As a member of the nine-nation Joint Strike Fighter programme since 2002, Lockheed executives have described Canada as a likely buyer for up to 80 F-35s, although the Department of National Defence has released a revised requirement for 65 jets.
Boeing's sales pitch to Ottawa is also focused on economic gains. Buying new Super Hornets could generate $8 billion in economic benefit for Canadian industry over 25 years, and provide access to offset work across the whole of Boeing and the Hornet Industry Team's portfolio of contract work, says Glenn Erutti, its director of new international Super Hornet business development.
Similarly, the four-nation Eurofighter consortium has touted "job creation and sustainment", as well as the ability to transfer "full sovereignty" over the Typhoon's operational technology, says Ian Malin, head of Typhoon exports business development for BAE Systems. BAE is leading Eurofighter's marketing campaign in Canada.

Tranche 2 notes:
Tranche 2 was originally supposed to consist of the three batches 3, 4 and 5 in which aircraft of the standards block 8, 10 and 15 should have been produced with the latter 2 featuring the EOC 1 & 2. EOC 1 & 2 was eventually replaced by P1E & P2E, but just P1E has been contracted (march 30th 2007) and P2E has been abondoned in favor for increamental upgrades similar to the RAFs austere package for block 5 aircraft.
I'm not sure if the batches are retained, but the block 10 & 15 has been eliminated. It might be that final tranche 2 aircraft will receive a new block number beyond 8. Plans call for the integration of additional weapons such as Brimstone, Storm Shadow, KEPD-350 Taurus and Meteor. Weapon options include HOSBO/HOPE, AIM-120C-7 (interim solution until Meteor is available), GBU-54 LJDAM and ARMs as well as ASMs if a customer requires it. 2000 l wing tanks are likely and additional avionics upgrade possible.
Tranche 3:
Tranche 3 was originally supposed to consist of the batches 6 & 7 with aircraft being produced in the so called block 20 & 25 configurations. As there were changes to T2 designations it might be that T3 aircraft will be designated differently. Capabilities has not been specified, but a number of options exists (CAESAR, CFT, motores repotenciados, TVC,...)

IPA7 will next also be used to complete the P1E air vehicle trials with Flight Control Handling Qualities flights with the new class of P1E 500lb precision guided bombs (Paveway IV).
The P1E Flight Test Programme has made a further step forward with the first flight today of a Phase 1 Enhancements product on a Tranche 2 IPA.
