Why does the APKWS cost 30% of a Hellfire missile's costs? Why is it not much cheaper?
Answered Nov 4, 2016
The answer to this lies in the way military-grade electronics are produced, and the lack of economies of scale: when you’re only making a few hundred or thousand of a certain component - and it has to meet a particular military spec , then costs are high. And the defence business has long accepted that’s the way it works. The many competitors to APKWS - DAGR, GATR and others - are all in a similar price bracket. So you are talking in the region of $30k
The only way to make a cheap missile it to built it around commercially-available, off-the-shelf components. That’s what the Navy did with the miniature Spike missile, 5-pound missile that can act as a laser seeker or lock on to a visual target. All-up cost is around $5k, and for many of the targets currently engaged by Hellfires - such as pickup trucks, cars and small groups of individuals - it would be just as good (and cause less collateral damage).
The thing is, no defence contractor has stepped up to turn it into a production item. Because what’s in it for them? Replace a $100k product with a $5k product with an inherently low profit margin and you’re cutting your own throat. Spike remains a development project.
USAF pushing to rapidly develop two hypersonic weapons but can’t predict field date
24 APRIL, 2018
In response to progress from China and Russia, the US Air Force is pushing to rapidly develop hypersonic cruise missiles in coordination with the other services, but can’t predict when those missiles will be deployed... the USAF is pursuing two hypersonic weapons prototyping programmes simultaneously: a hypersonic conventional strike weapon, or HCSW, which was contracted to Lockheed on 18 April, and an air-launch rapid response weapon, or ARRW, which has not been contracted.
...
DARPA and the USAF have other hypersonic initiatives, such as the boost glide programme. In a boost glide system, a rocket accelerates its payload to high speeds; the payload then separates from the rocket and glides unpowered to its destination.
