CANADA’S AIR FORCE TODAY
By Joetey Attariwala
For CDR’s annual Report on the RCAF, we sent Senior Staff Writer and Aviation Editor, Joetey Attariwala,
to interview the newly installed Commander of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Joetey sat down with LGen
Al Meinziznger at his office at NDHQ in Ottawa during CANSEC week. It was a wide ranging discussion that
touched on Future Aircrew Training, the Mali mission, FWSAR, interim fighter jet and more. Here is that conversation.

CDR: Please talk about the interim plan to acquire the Australian F/A-18 Hornets. Where we are in that process and when will those aircraft start to arrive? What will be needed to bring them up to RCAF standards?
LGen Meinzinger: We're working closely as a department with the Australians to get to a point where the agreement is fully laid out. We're anticipating the first of the Australian F-18s to be arriving in Canada in the 2019 timeframe. As we begin to accept these 18 aircraft we will look to ensure that they are upgraded and structurally sound such that they are consistent and aligned with our current CF-18 fleet. The actual delivery program and the delivery schedule of that is not set out at this stage. We will work to ensure they are provided any necessary regulatory and interoperability upgrades.
Based on the timelines for the competition to replace the CF-18, we're anticipating flying the last CF-18s to 2032, so we're currently looking at what are the key regulatory and interoperability investments that we'll need to make on that platform. Things such as ensuring we've got the right communication capabilities, updating our transponders to be compliant with operations in air spaces internationally and domestically and other enhancements - so there's a number of elements that we will address in keeping our CF-18 fleet interoperable moving through that final phase of its life.
CDR: Canada was part of the System Design and Development phase of the F-35 program - that phase is now concluded. Where do we now stand with regard to the F-35 program, vis-a-vis Canada?
LGen Meinzinger: We still are one of the partner nations in the next phase of the program. I believe the government of Canada recently made its annual payment contribution to the U.S. military at the end of May this year to ensure we’re at the table as one of the partners in the fighter jet project for the next year.

No solo carece de bahias internas, si no que lleva el bendito IRST...
Por lo demas, especialmente de frente, parece un F-22A.
