HMS Invincible sails out of service
One of the Royal Navy's three aircraft carriers is to be retired amid concerns that it will leave the senior service overstretched.
The navy's flagship HMS Invincible will sail into Portsmouth Naval Base for the last time before it is decommissioned.
A paying-off pennant will be flown as the 22,000 tonne warship sails into port with dignitaries and 250 family members of the ship's company on board to mark the occasion.
A flypast of Sea Harriers, Sea King helicopters, the Lynx Pairs Display Team and RAF Chinook helicopters will also take place to honour the warship's final trip.
Following Monday's ceremony, Invincible, which entered the navy 28 years ago, will hold an official reception for 500 former officers tomorrow and a paying-off parade on Wednesday.
And on Thursday, strike carrier HMS Illustrious will succeed Invincible as the service's flagship and be rededicated at a ceremony off Portsmouth following a £120 million refit and months of trials and sea training
Invincible is being taken out of service six months early, a move critics suggest is a cost-cutting operation to fund the on-going Iraq war. This leaves the navy with Illustrious as its only aircraft carrier in operational service while Ark Royal undergoes a major refit due to be completed at the end of next year.
The navy intends to replace its aircraft carriers in 2012 with a new generation of warships.
Portsmouth South Liberal Democrat MP Mike Hancock, a member of the Commons defence select committee, said: "I am appalled by this, I think it is complete and utter nonsense. This is all about the MoD finding funding to meet the costs of the war in Iraq.
"This is a very, very bad decision. It effectively means, with Ark Royal off the scene, we have one effective carrier and no reduction in commitments. We are going to have a very over-stretched crew on Illustrious."
